This is actually a collection of short stories featuring the detective Ellery Queen and his usual supporting cast of characters – his father, Inspector Richard Queen, his female assistant, Nikki Porter, and Inspector Queen’s dependable Sergeant Velie. The team of Frederic Dannay and Manfred B. Lee wrote and edited some 30 books and 70 short stories featuring this iconic American detective. The co-authors perfected the puzzle mystery, a formula in which the story recounting each complex mystery also presented to the reader all of the information needed to identify the guilty party from among the presented suspects.

This anthology brings together twelve stories each tied to a date on the calendar, one per each month of the year. The stories also share links to historical events and characters ranging from George Washington to Captain Kidd and the Emperor Caligula. These are stories from a quieter age in detective fiction, with little if any of the car chases, gun battles, or fist fights of later detectives, nor are these the stories that depend upon police procedures and modern forensic science to catch the criminals. As much fun as these other detective stories provide, I still enjoy the works of Ellery Queen and the added dash of history only added sauce to the mix for me. ( )
