De Samarkand à Chiraz, des portes de la Ville-Ronde à celles des soixante-douze nations, résonne encore la grandeur de son nom..."
Ainsi commence le récit consacré à l'une des plus hautes figures de la pensée universelle.

Né en 980 à Boukhara, Avicenne, ou Ibn Sina, est à dix-huit ans le médecin le plus renommé de son temps. Pris dans les remous et les guerres qui agitent les confins de la Turquie et de la Perse du XIe siècle, il est tour à tour nomade, exilé, vizir. Sa dernière étape le conduit à Ispahan, cité sublime, où il meurt à cinquante-sept ans après avoir bu, jusqu'à l'ivresse, à la coupe du savoir et de l'amour.
