Preface

A certain lack of coherence and connection, together with some repetition, may be noticed in portions of this book. This results from the fact that the work is a reprint of a series of articles originally published in THE FREEHOLD TRANSCRIPT—a series that, in the course of writing, was serveral times extended in length and broadened in scope in compliance with popluar request—and is necessarily incident to such a method of publication.
An Ancient Deer Drive and Two Unfinished Tales

Mutely eloquent of the Monmouth of another day, in sharp juxtaposition, English, Dutch, Scotch and Quaker, strove together for mastery, with cleavage of caste and family and politics and religion, there hangs above the fireplace of the room in which I write, a pair of antlers of the Virginian deer.
