The first time I picked this up, I wasn't sure about it; it seemed too self-oriented, too much like a log of personal experiences and philosophies, while I was looking for more of a creative instruction manual/source of inspiration. But there's only so much I can scan of a book while standing in the store ... and now that I've convinced myself to buy the book, I'm really happy I did. It *is* a source of inspirational examples, and it does contain personal thoughts -- but there's a significant section on techniques that describes what I think of as the "basic" novelty yarns (but which aren't covered in my other spinning books) through more advanced but still clearly-explained techniques that tell you in advance which techniques you should have mastered before you try them out. Then there's an awesome project section that I totally missed the first time I glanced through this book; this section is perfect for multi-hobby people like me, who like to combine multiple hobbies -- sewing, spinning, knitting, weaving, art, recycling, etc. -- in one project, or who might want to use their handspun yarns with different creative techniques. Overall, this book is written in an accessible but intelligent and thoughtful tone, and with multiple attractive projects, it reassured me on one of my art-yarn-related worries: What the heck will I *do* with it afterward? Can it possibly look good? It absolutely can. This book makes me want to pick up some of my scraps and stash and go make not just beautiful yarn, but remarkable wearable, usable, meaningful art. A lovely book. ( )
