This book is as much about how a person should live her life as it is about crochet.

Based on her text about crochet, Gertrude Taylor's take on life seems to be a bit rigid and uncompromising.

In Chapter 1, under the heading "If You Are Left-Handed, Ms. Taylor states "Left handed people can and should learn to crochet right-handed. Hold the hook as right-handed people do." She then cites as examples in support of her position the fact that violin an guitar players learn to play the instrument by bowing to the instrument, not the other way around.

From a crochet perspective, one area where this book excels is in giving directions on how to obtain a good fit for garments. Good fit is a problem I encounter with most clothes I buy, so someday, I hope to read this book carefully and closely enough (with hook and yarn at hand) that I am able to make myself something that fits.
