The story was that when Tom was hitchhiking, Mr. Masters and Shirley gave him a lift. In the car, Tom promised that he did the work which Mr. Masters wanted him to do instead he gets money from him because he needed money to live in London alone. Though he didn't know what the work was at that time, he heard a few weeks after that the work was to dive into water to find diamonds in the wreck. He worked for him hard but the work was dangerous. At the final day of the work, he was almost dead. (
