This text reflects aspects of an era of South African history and culture in photographic and written form. The book grew out of David Goldblatt's desire to explore South Africa's structural heritage, to put on film what seemed so immediately and potently eloquent of the civilisation we had built.

Signed by David Goldblatt at a meeting in Cape Town on 22 August 2008. One of my favourite photobooks evoking the politics of apartheid rather than showing it in a direct way as most of the struggle photographers did. Considering the title 'Café-de-Move-On' of my article in the book 'Questioning History. Imagining the Past in the Present', Rotterdam 2008 (edited by Frank van der Stok, Frits Gierstberg and Flip Bool) Goldblatt's book plays a crucial role in the history of South-African photography from the second half of the 20th century.
