The title promises far more than the book can deliver. The author endorses the idea that people remain unchanged, the same person from birth to old age. This is the complete opposite of what I had expected to find in the book, coming from the Buddhist notion of true nature in an ever-changing being. I could not make it past the first 3 or 4 chapters. In this eloquent and evocative book, Sarah Ban Breathnach encourages you to become an archaeologist of you Self: to plumb your past with its unfulfilled longings, forgotten pleasures, and abandoned dreams, to "excavate" the authentic woman buried inside.

I've dipped into this book many times over the years, but it has never made much difference to me. ( )

I loved her first book but this one just didn't connect with me like the first one. Perhaps because I was searching much more when I was thirty and not so much now.

I decided I didn't need this book. Either I have no authentic self or I've had it so long it just seems natural to me. Also, on a recent trip I happened to catch a little of the author's story on Oprah's new network and I'm afraid I don't think I should be taking advice from someone who appeared to have a serious shoe shopping addiction. Human beings, as far as I can tell, seem to be divided into two subspecies--the resigned, who live in quiet desperation, and the exhausted who exist in restless agitation.
