Last month my book club read The Accidental by Ali Smith and we got a lot of good conversation out of it. I'm looking forward to a future read of The Slap because I think it too will generate conversation.

I loved The Accidental, but I listened to it on audiobook, and I think it was a particularly good performance (they used different readers for the different characters).

And The Accidental? :-) P.S. I'm bugging you because you always tell me just enough to know whether I'm interested in adding a book to my wish list.

You didn't say what you thought about The Accidental, but maybe you did on your other threads?

Ah, Sara, then you must read The Accidental, if you haven't already.

Hmmm, I loved The Accidental but didn't care for Hotel World.

If you liked the Accidental, then I would highly recommend her earlier book, Hotel World.

I read The Accidental for Orange January this year, and I loved it, too. The end was a bit odd, so I can see why some people don't like it, but I thought it was good. It was a bit uncomfortable, and I was really mad at the mom, but it was a good ending for the book.

... Yep, I definitely have a BritLit addiction! I hope to read 5 more books from the list this year. Oh, I also read The Accidental, but I'm working from the original list, not the 2008 one, so I'm not counting it.

Book no 52 - The Accidental could go into three categories. It was shortlisted for a booker prize, orange prize and is in the 1001 books as well. But because I don't seem able to read many Bookers this year - that's wher eit went.

139. The Accidental by Ali Smith Liked this one so much better than the last one. I think you might be right about Drabble - her reputation is indeed better than this particular book - imo of course.

>149 I thought The Accidental was great. I'm reading her collection of short stories off and on. They're quirky, I like them. I think I have two more in the collection to read.

Now reading Ali Smith's The Accidental. Didn;t like it at first, but now theat I am getting into the story, its not so bad after all :)

I have The Accidental on my shelf waiting for me. It's good to hear a positive review about it. I will now be more inclined to read it sooner!

Marcia--I have the opposite reaction to cariola's. I'm lukewarm about The Accidental, but really liked Hotel World. Different strokes.....

>330, The Accidental it is! I will get it on my next trip to the library. :)

Thanks for the review of The Accidental... it sounds just up my alley (ha ha, pun totally intended). I read and enjoyed Girl Meets Boy last year, and I have Hotel World on my shelf, so I don't know if I'll get to that one or The Accidental first.

... enjoying it. All I want to do is sit and read but I have other things I should be getting on with. I tried to start The Accidental but was too tired, I think that one is going to require a bit more concentration.

Either going to start The Accidental or To kill a mocking bird. TKaMB seems to have been hovering over Mount TBR waiting to be read for months. I must be one of the few people in an English speaking country to not have it set as school reading at some stage.

Now that I've finished The Gathering, I'm going to have to go with The Accidental by Ali Smith as my November favorite.

I got a chuckle in reading The Accidental when a character mentioned "last year's Booker Prize winner, the one with the guy on a raft with all the animals." (Not a direct quote.) Obviously, Life of Pi. Hmmm, were Smith and Martel shortlisted the same year?

From The Accidental by Ali Smith: I was born free, I've had the time of my life and for all we know I'm going to live forever. (There's a whole chapter built on lies a character tells about her past--all drawn from news stories, movies, TV, and popular songs. Loved this novel!)

I am just about finished with The Accidental, and I'm not sure what I will pick up next. I'll be starting a new audiobook on a two-hour drive tomorrow, probably England's Mistress by Kate Williams, a bio of Lady Emma Hamilton, or The Crimson Portrait by Jody Shields.

Yep, the best one for October was definitely The Accidental by Ali Smith.

I am about to finish both my print book, The Accidental, and my audiobook, The Alchemist's Daughter. Not sure what I will start next.

I have way too many TBRs to be well organized enough to have a list of what I plan to read next. When I finish The Accidental, I'll just take a look at th stacks and choose one. It might be The Voyage Out, but I'm not sure.

I'm back in England, shifting between the 21st century in The Accidental and the early 18th in The Alchemist's Daughter.

#130 I started The Accidental last night, and I'm not sure yet what to think. I'm not a big fan of novels narrated in adolescents' voices, for one thing, so perhaps when it shifts, I'll enjoy it a bit more. Thanks for your comments. I plan to stick with the book for now.

>127 Cariola: I read The Accidental earlier in the year and found it a bit mixed. I really enjoyed the middle third of the book, and the narrative devices used, but the first and last third were a little disappointing. I would definitely give it a go though.

I'm thinking about making The Accidental by Ali Smith my next read. Comments, anybody?

I'm about to start a new book, but I can't decide between The Accidental by Ali Smith or I Think of You by Ahdaf Soueif.

... I started the audiobook bio Edith Wharton by Hermione Lee. I'm not certain which print book I'll pick up next; maybe The Accidental by Ali Smith. Or maybe a book of short stories, I Think of You by Ahdaf Soueif.

... Pope to write The Rape of the Lock. Not sure what I'll pick up next. Maybe On Beauty by Zadie Smith or The Accidental by Ali Smith. Anyone have recommendations on either?
