Last month my book club read The Accidental by Ali Smith and we got a lot of good conversation out of it. 61 Dirty Hava ... Ah, Sara, then you must read The Accidental, if you haven't already. Hmmm, I loved The Accidental but didn't care for Hotel World. If you liked the Accidental, then I would highly recommend her earlier book, Hotel World. I read The Accidental for Orange January this year, and I loved it, too. The end was a bit odd, so I can see why some people don't like it, but I thought it was good. It was a bit uncomfortable, and I was really mad at the mom, but it was a good ending for the book. ... Yep, I definitely have a BritLit addiction! I hope to read 5 more books from the list this year.
Oh, I also read The Accidental, but I'm working from the original list, not the 2008 one, so I'm not counting it. Book no 52 - The Accidental could go into three categories. It was shortlisted for a booker prize, orange prize and is in the 1001 books as well. But because I don't seem able to read many Bookers this year - that's wher eit went. 139. I will get it on my next trip to the library. :) Thanks for the review of The Accidental... it sounds just up my alley (ha ha, pun totally intended). I got a chuckle in reading The Accidental when a character mentioned "last year's Booker Prize winner, the one with the guy on a raft with all the animals." (Not a direct quote.) Obviously, Life of Pi.
Hmmm, were Smith and Martel shortlisted the same year? From The Accidental by Ali Smith:
I was born free, I've had the time of my life and for all we know I'm going to live forever.
(There's a whole chapter built on lies a character tells about her past--all drawn from news stories, movies, TV, and popular songs. Loved this novel!)
I am just about finished with The Accidental, and I'm not sure what I will pick up next.
I'll be starting a new audiobook on a two-hour drive tomorrow, probably England's Mistress by Kate Williams, a bio of Lady Emma Hamilton, or The Crimson Portrait by Jody Shields. Yep, the best one for October was definitely The Accidental by Ali Smith. I am about to finish both my print book, The Accidental, and my audiobook, The Alchemist's Daughter. Not sure what I will start next. I have way too many TBRs to be well organized enough to have a list of what I plan to read next.
