Loading... St. Daleby Sharyn McCrumb
None. Thoroughly enjoyable, and if you're not a NASCAR fan, don't worry; it's not really about the racing, it's about the people and the rather odd bond that brings them together. Not one of Sharon's best works, but the Earnhardt fan will probalby enjoy it. Even if you are not an Earnhardt fan, it was an amusing departure from McCrumb's usual style. A bit difficult to get through, (I'm not a racing fan) but.... it's on the re-read list. A diverse group participates in a Dale Earnhardt memorial tour, and each one has his own story and reason for relating to Dale. Very reminiscent of the Canterbury Tales. McCrumb tells her story with humor and compassion for her characters. I love Sharyn McCrumb Appalachian books and was so excited when I found that a new book came out. But then I heard the title was St. Dale. NASCAR. I don't have anything against NASCAR. I even have watched a few minutes of the cars lapping around the track at friend's houses. I appreciate NASCAR's historical routes. But this wasn't the McCrumb book I had been looking forward to. And yet... Here again were the themes that makes McCrumb's books stand head and shoulders above others in her genre. In St. Dale she has captured the spirit of Appalachia, their hopes, dreams, disappointments and their indomitable will. no reviews | add a review
