James Stewart has revised this text in North America, retaining the focus on problem solving, accuracy, explanations, and the graded problems. In this edition, Stewart has increased his emphasis on technology and innovation and has expanded his focus on problem solving and applications. When writing his previous editions, Stewart set out to bring some of the spirit of Polya to his presentation. This resulted in the "strategy sections" in the First Edition and the "Problems Plus" and "Applications Plus" in the Second Edition. Now in the Third Edition, he extends the idea further with a new section on "Principles of Problem Solving" and new extended examples in the Problems Plus sections. Stewart makes a serious attempt to help students reason mathematically.

It's a standard (one of *the* standards) Calculus textbook. I do wish there were harder/"messier" problems given in the end of sections; there definitely were some. Or, alternatively, the number of nearly identical problems could be reduced (if you didn't get the first 10 easy problems, 60 more aren't going to do you much good...) ( )

Epigraph
Preface -- A great discovery solves a great problem but there is a grain of discovery in the solution of any problem. Your problem may be modest; but if it challenges your curiosity and brings into play your inventive faculties, and if you solve it by your own means, you may experience the tension and enjoy the triumph of discovery. --- George Polya
