One I really like is The Cat Who Went to Heaven, by Elizabeth Coatsworth. It is about a poor artist who takes in a little cat. He is painting a picture of the death of the Buddha, depicting all the animals and their Buddha-nature. It's a lovely little book. And there's always Beatrix P ...

I agree with 19--The Cat Formerly Known as Cheshire rules. When I was younger I used to love The Cat Who Went to Heaven. So while I haven't read it in over a decade, I think that cat's one of my favorites too.
