Anti-Ice by Stephen Baxter zyndell, if that's the sort of hero you like, you'd probably appreciate an older Koontz book titled Cold Fire. The protagonist is definitely a sufferer, but he's got plenty of redeeming qualities as well. It's got aspects of sci-fi, paranormal, suspense, romance, and thriller in it.

I read a bunch of reviews on Amazon that said this book was interesting until it got near the end. I ... ... I read when I was fifteen. I loved it and immediately wanted to read more. I then read The Hideaway and then I read Cold fire and then I got bored with the formula. I would still recommed Dragon Tears as I loved that book. But I have not read Koontz since I was eighteen - a loooonngg ... ... you are right. He really loves his goldens. Costco has Lightning on audio and I was thinking about getting it. I may now.
