Totally made my day! My review of America, America by Ethan Canin is up now. I was surprised to see so many reviews! Were there that many ER copies? Or is it the most-read book of the summer? My goodness.
I really liked it, by the by. ... by Robert Klitzman, 84, Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff, In Search of London by H.V. Morton, and America America by Ethan Canin. Also waiting for me was my July ER book, Bitter Sweets by Roopa Farooki. Well, despite a family reunion weekend, I started America, America: A Novel by Ethan Canin and literally could not put it down. It is a remarkable book of American politics, social class identity and family relationships. Not brilliant, but striking. well worth reading, particularly if you ... ... lists numerous time I tend to recognize a lot of titles in the bookstores now. Today I stopped into Barnes & Noble and saw America America. I almost said out loud: "oh look, that book from ER!" I refrained. I also saw Sleeping Arrangments. I feel like I'm in the biz or something. How ... I just downloaded the sample of America, America: A Novel by Ethan Canin. It looks interesting; has anyone read it? #200, cameling: Ethan Canin's America America is a little lame in parts, but overall really an exceptional novel, warts 'n all. I'd never read anything by Ethan Canin, but I'm nearly 200-pages into his new novel America America and enjoying it quite a bit. ... Plus, I bought Stardust and Mirrormask on DVD last weekend. I'm besotted by Gaiman's work!
Hopefully I'll get America America soon, since I'm next on the list at the public library! ... care for Mishima's Spring Snow but felt this deserved consideration based on comments. An enjoyable, solid read.

I whipped through a piece of fluff yesterday that was not my usual type of historical novel: The Spanish Bride by Laurien Gardner. I wanted to put it on my swap shelf. For the same ... All finished with America America by Ethan Canin - overall, not too impressed but I bet the critics will eat this one up.
Will be starting Property by Valerie Martin today and really looking forward to it.

This one started off slowly and didn't grab me for about 200 pages. And that didn't last. It was just a so-so-read, ponderous and predictable. The author had too many themes running, the characters were stereotypes, and he kept trying to create ... #192 Cariola: I read America America as well, and read it less to find out "what really happened" but as a commentary on the politic process, especially as we watch the battle for the Democratic nomination. I really enjoyed the story itself, and having made it through the whole thing was ... ... this weekend. Both books, while very different, earned four-star ratings from me. Good reads.
Next up is my ER copy of America America by Ethan Canin, but Cariola's comment above has me concerned! I am struggling with America, America by Ethan Canin, an ER book. I've read about 125 pages and it's just not doing anything for me. The plot moves really slowly and I just don't feel invested in the characters.
Not sure I will be able to finish this one . . with so many books on my TBR ... Just finished an ER book I will highly recommend, America America, and I'm half way through The Year of Living Biblically which is pretty good also... Several LT firsts for me today...I just posted my first review of my first ER book (America, America by Ethan Canin) and this is my first post to a group.
I'm about half way through the 950 pages of Sacred Games by Vikram Chandra, which I had to interrupt for the ER book (and will ... I'm finishing up America, America by Ethan Canin and loving it! It's an ER book and the author crafts his story gently with wonderful prose. There's the family that is the economic engine fo the townspeople, the beloved Senator running for President, and the narrator, a journalist who grew up ... Just finished America America (highly recommend) and almost to the end of On the Shoulders of Giants and will probably start Legerdemain tonight... #39: America America (ER/novel, 454 pgs)
Loved it. Not earth-shattering, grand and sweeping, probably not great, but a story and characters that I learned about and cared for, and a personal, involving story... reminded me somewhat of Empire Falls, but not as busy, or even A Thousand ... Work has been quite busy as of late that I cannot seem to finsih a book! I am in the middle of America America by Ethan Canin and The Enchantress of Florence by Salman Rushdie. I am sure both will end up on my end-of-month list, if I manage to finish either. I will be gone until next Thurs ... GD, here's another one for yours (and everyone's) TBR stack: America America by Ethan Canin... an ER book, and even though I'm not finished with it yet I can already praise it and recommend it! ... Liked it a lot.

I had better pick up my early review book, America, America, next. 35. America America by Ethan Canin. I loved this tightly-woven chronicle of politics and family in small-town 1970s New York. Intuiting early on that the story would be complex, I read it carefully, so as to catch cross-references and nuances. This paid off, and I ended Corey's story with ... started 2 new ones last night: America America, an ER free book!, and 101 Ways to Bug Your Teacher...
Somewhat selfishly got Book Thief for my son, now can't wait for him to finish so I can take it over... ... point at the beginning of a chapter... I hate when they do that!)
