I am reading The Likeness by Tana French. It is her follow up to In the Woods, and so far I prefer it.

In Dublin about to go undercover as a murder victim that looks exactly like me in The Likeness.

I had to set down Under the Dome because the distraction of my personal life made its size too daunting. I picked up The Likeness by Tana French which is good so far.

Hi Carol, I have Likeness on my Kindle but can't read it until I finish all of the other books I have to read (I am hopelessly behind I'm afraid...but I can't decide whether that is good news or bad). Hope you have a good holiday season.

Jude- Nice review! I'm so glad you liked it! Now you'll have to get around to The Likeness. It's from Cassie's point of view! Later friend!

I stopped at our little book shop on the spur of the moment today.....was pleased to find The Likeness by Tana French. This is the follow-up to her debut thriller, In The Woods. Looking forward to reading this.

Hi everyone! Just thought I would let you know that I picked up The Likeness by Tana French today in paperback. It is the follow-up to our earlier read In the Woods. Don't know when I will get around to reading it but when I do I will let you know what I think. I gotta say, I sure do ...

#134 The storyline for The Likeness is implausible. That's why it took me so long to actually read it. But it sucks you in nevertheless! #135 Thanks Stasia. Everyone is healthy for the time being. I was lucky enough not to catch any of the illnesses going around at my house. #136 I ...

>137 Linda, from the reviews I've seen, The Likeness features the same characters; I'm not sure how much of the plot of the first book it gives away though, not having read it just yet!

I'm adding The Likeness to the tbr mountain. Does this one stand alone, or should I read In the Woods (also on my tbr pile) first?

... in when In the Woods is mentioned. One of the best books I've read, regardless of genre, in the last several years. And The Likeness is right there, too. Can't wait for her next one.

Jude- Never too late for bandwagon jumping, here on LT. In the Woods is a terrific read and the follow-up The Likeness is right there too!

Ooh, I really must get to The Likeness soon... I have a few books that I MUST read this week as they're borrowed from a friend who's visiting next week, and it would be great to be able to return them directly rather than via the post. But after that, perhaps.

... mountains. A fun, if shallow read. There is a sequel, but I think I'll pass on reading it. 3 Stars BOOK 113 The Likeness by Tana French The second book in a new mystery series by the author of In the Woods. I've enjoyed both books, but this one is the better of the two. Tana ...

22. The Likeness by Tana French 23. Freakonomics by Steven Levitt

Book # 70 - The Likeness Book # 71 - Loving Frank Book # 72 - Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder Comments and reviews to follow as I am able to post. Ruth/womansheart

Just finished The Likeness by Tana French - very good characterisation, although the plot seemed a bit overblown - and for those just discovering the joys of Wilkie Collins and a slower, more tense read, try Mary E Braddon - Lady Audley's Secret is brilliant!

... my back door today were two packages of books: Angels of Mercy by Lyn Andrews One Grave Too Many by Beverly Connor The Likeness by Tana French The Case of the Gilded Fly by Edmund Crispin The Ice Soldier by Paul Watkins Rommel's Gold by Maggie Davis Bottomfeeder by D.H. Finge ...

... the book on the reserve list at the Main Library. Hope that it is not too long of a wait. Now, for me, it's back to The Likeness, then, a few minutes of the news, supper, then, more reading. Tomorrow, I am off to a Wolf Preserve in Northwest Florida with a small group from Florida State ...

... generosity. The book that calls my name like a Dallas cheerleader when "the team" is two yards from the goal line??? The Likeness by Tana French. Go figure. Her first was In the Woods which I enjoyed completely for the writing, the characters and the sense of place she creates. N ...

... the inside for people other than him. Am going to try and look out for it. Tana French is great too - I've got a copy of The Likeness but haven't got to it yet. Quite probably will this month as I'm feeling utterly brain-dead and in need of some more 'fun' reads.

Believe it or not, but The Likeness is even better than In the Woods. An excellent beginning to your Challenge.

... I am also on the last stretch of a crime novel called Falling Angel. Gritty and exciting. >DMO- Hope you enjoyed The Likeness! I just finished it and loved it!

I'm so glad you liked both The Likeness, whose premise should have made for a terrible book, and A Suitable Boy. My reaction on finishing that doorstop was that it should have kept going. Now I'm waiting for the sequel.

I'm finishing The Likeness by Tana French and will move on to Double Cross by James Jordan. I got it in an early reviewers giveaway. I'll post a review when I'm done with that. I recently finished The Memory Keeper's Daughter. I highly recommend it.

I finished and loved The Likeness by Tana French. Highly recommend it! I started Falling Angel by William Hjortsberg. This was lent to me by a special LT friend and it has started out very strong. On Nancy Pearl's latest podcast, she interviewed Craig Johnson. He writes a Wyoming ...

The Likeness is Tana French's second mystery and involves one of the main characters of the first one. In the Woods was told from the point of view of the male partner of two cops and dealt a lot with the effect of a case on a trauma in his past. This second book is not a sequel of that one. The ...

... bed sleeping and reading last weekend. So, I finished A Suitable Boy which I've been reading for a few weeks, as well as the Likeness. It seems to me an amazing feat, as a writer, simply to be able to keep all the threads of a story clear through 1500 pages, but, of course, Vikram Seth ...

... into the politcal upheaval created by the crumbling of the Soviet Union in the 90's. I have to tell you that I ordered The Likeness by Tana French this morning, your good reviews jogged my memory of how much I liked her first book.

I finished The Likeness and glad to report that Tana French has delivered another gem. Anyone here, has not read her, do it now! I'm also nearly finished with The Survivor: Bill Clinton in the White House and that too has been excellent! > jhedlund- Here's a fat ripe tomato for you! At ...

> Mark - Good review on The Likeness. Simple may not necessarily be easy, but it sure makes for a good, consise review with no spoilers. Very good advice to recommend that readers begin with her first book, In the Woods. This book introduces some of the same characters, so you are ...

Hi Joanne- Yes, the books keep pouring in! It''s like a waterfall! I finished The Likeness and loved it. Stop by and see the review!

Congratulations on your hot review found on today's home page! I'm adding The Likeness to my ever growing to be read pile.

57) The Likeness by Tana French ****1/2 Cassie Maddox is a detective in Dublin. She works in the DV, the Domestic Violence squad. It’s boring, predictable and safe, especially compared to her earlier assignments in undercover and homicide. When a young woman turns up murdered in an ...

... board!! Belva & Ruth- Yes, Tana French is the real deal! Forget the "crime" stigma and enjoy! Here's an early nugget from The Likeness: "Some people are little Chernobyls, shimmering with silent, spreading poison: get anywhere near them and every breath you take will wreck you from the inside ...

Hi, Mark - I read In the Woods also, and I am looking forward to reading The Likeness. She can write so well about the inner life of the characters. I will get the newer one back at the top of my list. Have a good day, and a good week, Mark. Ruthie

... my favorite genre, and it had contained such intelligence and depth. Now I am deeply immersed into her follow-up novel, The Likeness and I have a feeling this will be as good if not better. If you are not familiar with French, make an introduction, you will not be disappointed.

... today on a NPR podcast and she sounded very appealing, so I was thinking of giving her a try. BTW, I'm deeply immersed in The Likeness. French is a heck of a writer. She's very deliberate but sucks you in. Hope you are having a great weekend!

Big wave to Caroline! Sorry Beat didn't work out. You hung in there though! I'm deeply immersed in The Likeness. She is such a good writer!

... of books by authors where I had only read one other book of theirs, was the easiest of the categories. My favorite was The Likeness by Tana French and Written in Bone was the weakest of a strong group. Recommended: this category was made up of my Early Reviewer books and ...

... Great to see you here! I have not yet read When Will There Be Good News but it's sitting in my tbr. I just started The Likeness and it's terrific! Don't be a stranger!

... over a year ago and loved it! What a great new literary voice! So I was pretty fired up about starting the follow-up The Likeness. Rejoice! It grabbed me immediately! French is going to be an author to watch for a long long time!

... Overall, however, it was a good read if you like psychological murder mysteries. I will probably read her next book, The Likeness. Recommended 3 stars

When I heard that Cassie was featured in The Likeness, it crossed my mind that Sam would be the feature detective in a third book. :)

I would really like a book about Sam, the third detective in In the Woods. He figures more prominently in The Likeness, so it seems a natural progression to have him as the protagonist. Whatever she does next, I will read it.

... the one question remains unanswered - although one person in the group was certain she knew whodunnit. LOL. I have The Likeness checked out from the library, so maybe I'll have to move it higher on my TBR list. The author hasn't ruled out that she might do another book about the ...

... the heart of In the Woods does seem to be the thing that divides those who loved the book from those who didn't. I liked The Likeness even more than In the Woods, in part because it's told from his partner's point of view and gives a new depth to the earlier book. American Wife is ...

... ideas. I'm still reading The Survivor: Bill Clinton in the White House which has been very good and I will be starting The Likeness by Tana French, a book I've bumped a few times recently, a dirty shame.

Urania, I will let you know how the Likeness is when I get a chance to read it - I have it on hold and it didn't look like there was much of a wait list, and there were several copies.

... a major plot question. Overall, however, I didn't regret reading this book, and will probably read French's next mystery, The Likeness which features one of the same detectives. American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld--a novelization of the life of Laura Bush (here Alice Blackwell). The ...

41, 42 That's great to hear. I just read In the Woods on my daughter's recommendation, and just put The Likeness on hold at the library. I heard it involved the same two main characters, and wanted to follow them further. Now, I have even more reason to look forward to it.

The Likeness is one of my favorite books of this year. I can't wait to see what Tana French comes up with next.

The Likeness by Tana French surpassess her first novel, In the Woods, for me. The character of Cassie Maddox, who was also in the first book, carries the story very well, going undercover as one of five friends living together. She successfully pulls off living as Lexie among the friends for a ...

>80 A Widow for One Year was my first John Irving. I hope you love it as much as I do. Just this very minute finished The Likeness by Tana French, a crackling good police procedural with one of the same main characters, Cassie Maddox, as her first book, In the Woods. I hope she is writing ...

I finished Tana French's The Likeness - it's dark and riveting and thought-provoking. Have any of you read In the Woods? It sounds a tudge too dark for me, and I was wondering what you thought of it.l Then I moved on to Heroic Measures by Jill Ciment - she's quite good with sensitive ...

... Larsson Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood The Patron Saint of Liars by Ann Patchett And, I think, The Likeness by Tana Frenchwhich I am reading now. Only four so far. I had two rereads this quarter. Might squeeze in a fifth new favorite from my robust TBR pile ...

Rice Krispies Treats and raisins, while reading The Likeness by Tana French. Half healthy anyhow.

... first time in April and missed some fine points, which made much more sense this time around. I'll start Tana French's The Likeness at lunchtime today.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson Amazing The Likeness by Tana French Very good. Philosophical A Fatal Grace by Louise Penny Great cozy. Love the poetry. Gamache rocks.

... n 17. Priest by Ken Bruen 18. The Chicago Way by Michael Harvey Currently reading Sail by James Patterson and The Likeness by Tana French. Always looking for suggestions!

I have read 3 copies of Stranger in a Strange Land to tatters.. so far. I finished The Likeness, loved it.. and will start The Day the Falls Stood Still today.

No title that I have found, and I seriously doubt he will endear himself to me. There was more of him in The Likeness than in In the Woods and he really ticked me off. mckait in What Are You Reading Now? : Gathering Place 2009 - Eighth Thread (Aug 10, 2009, 7:45am)

... Karen, sorry that you are restless with your reading.. I hate that feeling. It took me to page 25 to be as drawn to The Likeness as much as I was to In The Woods. It was worth the read in my opinion.. I really liked it. I am planning to continue reading simple summer reads this ...

#104 The Likeness Again, I loved reading this book. I was drawn into the story immediately. We are asked to believe the improbable, but that is a novel after all. French makes the unlikely seem possible, kept my attention, and gave me a very enjoyable read. I recommend both this book and ...

#59,64 - Agree, The Likeness is every bit as good, in some ways better. French is the best mystery writer I have come across in a long, long time. This The Secret Magdalene though is crappy. Some interesting philosophy and subject matter - but not well written. I guess I'll finish it since ...

I am now into The Likeness and liking it a lot. ..

Started The Likeness, and al I can say is this author is good! So glad to be back with my favorite character from the first novel :)

oooo you'll love The Likeness. I really enjoyed In the Woods but The Likeness I thought was even better. I'm waiting for her next book already!

This wa a good idea , kmom .. for many reasons.. too many! I am feeling kinda out of sort.. I have a good book (The Likeness), but then I had a good one yesterday too (In The Woods)... but I am still kinda grumpy. I hate this feeling!

jhowell... I too loved In The Woods and look forward to beginningThe Likeness today. Sometimes I think reviewers think that if a book isn't a classic, or one that will "improve your mind or spirit" they shouldn't like them. PSHAW! I like what I like. Sometimes I learn, sometimes I just enjoy. ...

Anyone have a copy of The Likeness by Tana French? This is a hard one to track down and if someone can spare a copy. Thanks!

#103 kellian - I loved In the Woods and am glad to read such a positive opinion of The Likeness. It's sitting on my shelves, just waiting to be read. I'll have to move it up in the tbr pile. I agree about typos and the misuse of language too. I just read about "marshall law" yesterday! ...

... my To Buy list. Glad to hear such a strong recommendation for it. #100: I agree with having read the first book making The Likeness more enjoyable. I really think that she outdid herself with The Likeness--hard to see how she's going to equal or better that act!

Last night I started The Likeness by Tana French - her follow up to In the Woods. So far, I'm really enjoying it!

It's good to know that there's one author we agree on. I thought The Likeness was a better book than In the Woods, but I'm not sure it would be as good had I not had the background provided in the first book.

2--I felt the same way about finishing The Likeness :) I forget what I read after it, but no doubt I judged it much more harshly in comparison. I'm making (slow) progress with Quo Vadis. It's quite good, but so far, not much has happened...

... I taken The Choice from your list of May books for my TBR mountain. #3 Wow what a list. I have put Aberrations and The Likeness onto my TBR mountain.

You didn't. Thanks for starting the June thread. I just finished The Likeness and was moping about because it was so good and so over, when I got a copy of The Angel's Game. So I'm reconciled to the pain of finishing a good book.

Thanks for the review of The Likeness. I've been considering reading it since I enjoyed French's first book In the Woods well enough, but the idea of a detective posing as the double for a murder victim seemed far-fetched.

... The slow destruction of Rob Ryan, and the small insights into his "true" character were awesome. I immediately bought The Likeness, the follow-up from an In The Woods character's POV, and dove in. Also loving it.
