Despite the implacable hostility of the Church of God Awaiting, Charis still stands, still free, still tolerant, still an island of innovation in a world in which the Church has worked for centuries to keep humanity locked at a medieval level of existence. But the powerful men who run the Church aren't going to take their defeat lying down. Charis may control the world's seas, but it barely has an army worthy of the name. And as King Cayleb knows, far too much of the kingdom's recent good fortune is due to the secret manipulations of the being that calls himself Merlin--a being that, the world must not find out too soon, is more than human. A being on whose shoulders rests the last chance for humanity's freedom.--From publisher description.… (more)

Way too much filler/setup. Understandable in such a long series, especially for Weber and his dinosaur size infodumps. Hopefully it will pay off in the third book ( )

Long winded and nowhere near as good as the first book. Will not be carrying on with this series! ( )

JESUS H. CHRIST. MOVE IT ALONG, WEBER, THIS READS LIKE A PLAY-BY-POST RPG.

The conflict between Charis and the Group of Four/Knights of the Temple Lands/Mother Church continues in the 2nd Safehold book. While the truth about Nimue is revealed to several characters, the pace and plot feel pretty laid back. Most of the action is focused around the growing relationship between Charis and Chisholm and their leaders.
Another enjoyable read.. still a bit slow paced, but gradually building up the backstory for the obviously coming big battles, as lines are being drawn between both sides.

Struggled like crazy to get through it. Tore it in half after getting to page 273. ( )

This one is for Sharon. Well they all are, really, and I don't usually do public love letters, but this year is an exception. Thank you for marrying me all over again. I love you.
