Genre: realistic fiction
Critique of Genre: This is a sweet example of realistic fiction because there is a young girl whose little cousin comes to visit and she is told to take care of him while their mothers visit. She decides to take him on a hike up the hill and they work together to get over their fears.
Characterization: Brendan is a somewhat flat character because we don't know a lot about what he is like before this story or how he is after. However, I would have to say he's dynamic because in the beginning he doesn't want to go hiking with his cousin and complains the whole way to the top of the hill, but he learns to trust his cousin and appreciate the beauty he sees when they reach their destination. When they head back he is a lot more brave than he was before and when they get back to the house he asks his cousin if they can go again tomorrow.
