I don't think anyone has mentioned Mr. McGregor, from Peter Rabbit. After all, Peter's father was put into a pie by Mr. McGregor. My daughter was terrified of him from age 2 to about 4. ... list books which haven't been mentioned, but I've loved a lot of those here, especially the little hand sized versions of The Tale of Peter Rabbit and others by Beatrix Potter. Maurice Sendak had tiny books too.
All-time favorites for me were: The Tomten and the Fox by Astrid Lindgren and ... ... Recently saw Miss Potter and wasn't very familiar with all her stories, only Peter Rabbit.
I was surprised by how short Peter Rabbit actually is compared to some of her other stories. It only takes about 1 minute to read. Still great stories to read as an adult and remember to read to ... ... the 58 books on this list.
I recommend the story anthologies of Daniel Halpern The art of the story (recent) and the art of the tale - earlier.
You might discover writers you would like to read more of, and the stories he chose are all very good.
I don't really look for 'a good ... ... the Art of the Short Story. It has writers from all over the world, born after 1937. His earlier anthology was called The Art of the Tale and it is one of my very favorite books. His selections are wonderful.
I recently enjoyed a story called "Intimacy' by Hanif Kureishi , and a ... Can you recommend some must-have books for children under 10? I'm thinking of ones like:

Jack ... I like to give Peter Rabbit or the whole 23 book box set--but it's not always easy to get.

Perhaps it should be mentioned in the group description that the lists used here are of US ... ... was not translated so that Latin readers could encounter HP; same for the Latin translations of The Cat in the Hat, Peter Rabbit, and other works. They are novelties or study exercises, a completely different social group than the primary works. For storytime this week we read, Skip to My Lou by Nadine Bernard Westcott, The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter, The Pigeon Finds a Hotdog by Mo Willems and But no Elephants by Jerry Smath.
