A squirrel teases Mr. Owl.

Oh gods, a seriously formative book, based upon which I spent most of a day siding with an owl. ( )

This was so much fun to re-read!
This was a life-defining book for me, it was the first English book I was given at the age of 10 (my mother tongue is Dutch), and it inspired me to become a translator.
I've always had this fascination for language, and reading Squirrel Nutkin, painstakingly translating with an enormous dictionary next to it (yes, this was pre-internet), only fed the flame. ( )

Avl, sans illus., on gutenberg.org. And if you know Potter's art, you can imagine the pix quite well for yourself. Good riddles; my favorite kind. Good lesson for the naughty little squirrel, too. I'm not a huge fan of Peter Rabbit, but I do like some of the other stories by Potter. ( )
