The national epic of Vietnam, the Tale of Kieu represents for many the height of Vietnamese literature.

Be warned, it gets very sad and depressing...

It is a story of two lives, of the tragic story of a woman of Confucian virtue who is sold into slavery to save her family but who never gives up her true love and as a metaphor for the author, Nguyen Du's, wounded patriotism after being forced to collaborate with the administration of a new dynasty to save his family.

This version provides both the Vietnamese and the English text on facing pages.
