Prince Maximilan was a German explorer, ethnologist and naturalist who arrived in North America in 1832 to document the plains Indians accompanied by Swiss artist Bodmer.. Beautiful little book (187 pp) bound well of firm wraps with Indian dancer on front.. Anthology in color reproductions of clothing, costumes, and ornaments worn by American Indians on almost every page. Accompanying descriptive text in English, German, French. ( )

This book reproduces Karl Bodmer’s hand-colored illustrations of American Indians of the northern Great Plains, originally made for a travel book by Prince Maximilian of Wied and published in Germany from 1839 to 1841. The pictures are accompanied by excerpts from the book and an original interpretive essay. The entire text is presented in English, German, and French.
