After reading The Poisonwood Bible last month, I had planned to do the same, but then I saw what others had written and thought my comments didn't fit at all, so I didn't post. I had ... I just finished The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. I had read it for this group's Orange July challenge, but it works well for this read, too.

I have to echo the recommendation for The Poisonwood Bible as it is a great comment on faith, religion, and the difference between the two. Since I last posted to this thread I have read Alias Grace, The Poisonwood Bible and Fugitive Pieces. ... girlybooks Orange July reading going on and it seems to be getting all the action--although the current book I'm reading, The Poisonwood Bible fits into both catagories.

I feel like I'm the last person on earth to read this novel. What is left to say about it that hasn't been said already? People either love it or hate it, and I fall squarely in the the "love it" camp. What I most loved about it was the different ... Oh, I totally agree. The bad omen aspect of twins is described in The Poisonwood Bible as well. I think it's interesting that Adichie used twins as major characters in her novel but didn't go into this. I like that--instead of S P E L L I N G everything out, she leaves some details up to the ... A hearty second to amanaceerdh # 164 about the poisonwood bible, the history of love, the namesake, septembers of shiraz and brick lane. I thought they were all wonderful and in reverse order of my preference - I liked brick lane best and the poisonwood bible least, ).
There is a film ... ... but the themes and messages are very different from each other. Having read both in the past few months, I expect that The Poisonwood Bible will stay in my mind longer than Half a Yellow Sun, which is already fading away. But I should really wait six months before I commit to that :-) 153: the red tent is one of my very favorite books!!

I too loved The Poisonwood Bible which I read a few years ago.
I have enjoyed all of the Margaret Atwwod novels that I've read so far. Since I've last posted, I've read The Poisonwood Bible (loved it, don't exactly get why people hate this one--if you hated it, please explain). I'm continuing to enjoy The Waves, and also enjoying Fugitive Pieces.
Just back from a 2 week break from LT, so I hope this doesn't sound too disjointed . . .
While I was camping I read The Poisonwood Bible, by Barbara Kingsolver. I thought it was terrific, but I've read so many negative comments from readers on the web. What did you think?

In The Poisonwood Bible the villagers spend a lot of time on the sidelines waiting to see how well Jesus protects the Missionaries. They are waiting to see if he is so ... I had a look at my Unsuggester, and I'm seeing several titles which I own.

For my next book, please choose one tagged on deck. Thanks! LIke Rebecca, I rated The Poisonwood Bible lower than Half of a Yellow Sun. For me the latter was 5/5 because of: a) the characters b) the story of Nigeria/Biafra c)the struggles of the characters d) the writing.
Although the writing was not the most beautiful I have ever read, I could not ... ... I already had at home. :-/ I shall now commence a No MORE books! policy until I can dynamite a good hole in MT. TBR.

I am currently reading 1st to Die by Patterson and have The Poisonwood Bible coming. For non-fiction I am working on A History of the Toy Theatre. Oh, mrstreme, I would say you are in for a treat with The Poisonwood Bible, Kingsolver's magnum opus, imho. I loved Five Quarters of an Orange, nickelini. I hope you do too! I have The Poisonwood Bible on my Orange July list too. That will be my first fiction book by Kingsolver, having only read two books of her essays (which were fabulous).
I am going to start my first Orange July book today: Hal ... I've packed away The Poisonwood Bible for my camping trip next week. I'm not sure what else I will read. Maybe Five Quarters of an Orange. ... front of the bookstore today, so we didn't go in, and so, alas, no new books (like I need them!). But I'm chiming in on the Poisonwood Bible conversation. It's packed in my bag for my camping trip coming up next week. I was given a copy about five years ago, and I've avoided reading it. Although ... Prodigal Summer, loved it even more than Poisenwood Bible. I loved Prodigal Summer so I was dissappointed when I couldn't get into Poisonwood Bible. I may have to try again on Poisonwood Bible. It just seemed like a chore at the time. And I know I got about 100 pages into it. I did keep it, though, hoping it might work at a later time. It was also one of the options for my daughter's AP English class, so between that and all the thumbs up ... I just finished The Poisonwood Bible and I am now starting on The English Patient #106 I loved The Poisonwood Bible it does start off really slow though. I tried reading it a few years ago and actually fell asleep in the process! I picked it up again last week though and after getting through the first 50 pages or so, I found myself just wanting to constantly read it.
Finished The Poisonwood Bible started The English Patient Did you like The Poisonwood Bible? I started it and put it aside. A lot of people have been telling me conflicting stories about the book. I had been putting off reading this book for forever, and when I did, it was so good I almost cried when it was over.

Loved them both. #55, 0bazooka0 - I read The Poisonwood Bible for the first time about a month ago and cannot recommend it highly enough! It was phenomenal...tied for the best read of 2008 so far (other is Rebecca, a book I meant to read for years before I finally did). Hope you enjoy! I just finished Dining on Stones this evening, so now onto Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell. After that I have The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver which I have been meaning to read for years. ... couldn't finish that I always mean to come back to, and some novels that are still on my shelves waiting to be read like the poisonwood bible There seems to be a lot of ian mcewan so maybe I should give him a go. ... this list (just because it's a mystery?)

Obviously ... ... centers upon the very real persecution of the Catholic Church in 1920s Mexico.
In my estimation, Barbara Kingsolver's The Poisonwood Bible was a terrific read, but I've noticed on other sites that many disagree.

As for The Poisonwood Bible, I read that years ago and enjoyed it, but would not put it in the same class as Half of a Yellow Sun. ... Brooklyn won the NBCC prize. I also really enjoyed The Poisonwood Bible for similar reasons but rated it four and a half stars.
