I had resisted The Reader since it was first published. I finally read it a couple of weeks ago. It is quite good. 17. Høytleseren (or better known as: The Reader) by Bernhard Schlink
I picked this audiobook up from my local library, as I just came across it, and since I knew it was on the 1001 books list.
This is a strong story about love, life, shame, war and what to do! It was quite sad in ... ... movie :) I'm thinking I'll have to add it to my Netflix list.
Haunted is a good way to describe how I feel after reading The Reader. It's one of my top books this year.

However, I read The Reader several years ago so I don't know exactly what I'm going to ask or say. Followed by The Reader, which I'm leading in July for book club and want to read ahead to time to make notes and whatnot. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by ... A look back: I recently saw The Reader the movie, and it definately is one of the better adaptations I have seen. I cannot say it adds anything really important to the experience after reading the book but neither does it miss anything important. And it reminded me again how substantial the book ... ... one of my favorite reads thus far in 2009. And, like you, I think his other work simply cannot compare.
Have you read The Reader by Bernard Schlink? If not, I highly recommend this book. I read it after The Book Thief and the two were good books back to back.

The American Way of Death Rev ... ummm i think it's unfair to hold being promoted by Oprah against every book treated that way. the reader is a very serious and somber novel and unless you want to be bummed out for the season, you might want to wait till the new year to read that one. Speaking of Winslet movies, there's the flap over The Reader by Schlink. It sounds like a terrible, slow-going movie. On the bright side, Kate Winslet is abundantly naked. The Reader is set in the late 50s and 80s, but the main plot takes place during World War II. It's one of the better books about post-war German guilt about the Holocaust.

And the language is straightforward. I read it in about three hours. Time well spent, I think. I finished the Reader yesterday. Definitely worth reading, although it presents some troubling ideas. Glad I read it, but not sure I actually liked it. Would make an excellent book club read, because there is lots to discuss and debate. And it's a quick read.
