This book has a decidedly urban New York feel but the writing is really cleverly paired with the illustrations. You'd never guess without seeing the illustrations that the girl wasn't on some fantastic journey and it really makes you think twice about how so much of the world is about how we perceive it. I can easily imagine what a small child recognizing this other world in one that you or might think of as a rundown New York neighborhood. I loved this book. ( )

The illustrations in this book are very soft, which makes the city seem more like a fairy tale. I loved the perspective of the little girl, and the way in which her city is transformed by her imagination. I think it would be a fun idea to have students write about their own cities or neighborhoods as a fairy tale.
