I have an abiding respect and affection for Elizabeth George even though I'm fairly new to her writing. She writes with such honesty and is so very human that it's difficult not to like her. In fact, if I'd to choose an author to meet there's a good chance I'd choose her.

Loving God with All Your Mind treads on difficult territory for me - I'm not a fan of authors who prescribe 'think nice thoughts' for depression. This is possibly because that approach works fine for 'down in the dumps' but not for Clinical Depression (in my opinion) and there seems to be some confusion among authors about having 'normal' sad feelings about sad situations and actually suffering from a 'real' illness. For this reason, I tend to shy away from such books and I feared Loving God ... would be another of the same. It's not - although it does tread close to the line.

George takes us through six or seven Scripture verses and explains how they've helped her overcome what I'll call 'negative feelings.' Her approach does require one to challenge these thoughts - wallowing in a pit of despair is not allowed - and I have found it helpful.

The final chapter is the one that made the most impression on me - George tells us about the way she used the verses to help herself through an earthquake and its aftermath in the San Fernando valley. Her writing appears very immediate:

'These last eleven days ...'

and this, to me, makes the whole book a lot more credible. ( )

Another great book by Elizabeth George. Filled with practical insight and great ideas for changing thought patterns and learning to focus on Christ instead of self.
