A Russian tale of a man who goes through the countryside offering to buy dead serfs from landowners. His status as toast of the town can't last when word of what he has been doing gets out. Soon, he is rumored to be involved in every nasty doing in town. Based on Gogol's classic story of Tsarist Russia, the language looks dated, and the idea of buying serfs rings strange to modern ears, but it is still a quirky, intriguing work that can keep you interested. Laurence is a brilliant translator who translates classic works in the spirit they were written without any of the pompous self-importance common in 20th-century translations. In Dead Souls, he re-imagines the novel as a hilarious play. ( )
