Andujar, who lives in Chicago, is one of the most exciting young Latin American writers today. Candela starts out more or less straightforwardly as a police procedural, but the mystery is revealed early on in the novel, and soon you realize you're in for something much more complex, and existentially despairing, than a crime novel.
