Shawn McDaniel suffers from cerebral palsy to the extent that he cannot communicate at all. But even with this severe handicap, Shawn is happy. He is brilliant. He remembers everything he sees and hears and feels. He has imagination. But his father, who left the family soon after he was born because he couldn’t take the pain of having such a needy son, is rationalizing euthanizing such people, and Shawn is convinced his father will kill him--out of love. The ending is a cop out. The book is fairly frank with Shawn’s fantasies about a beautiful aide and his sister’s pretty friend and contains some profanity/swearing. Positive and worth reading because of its attempt to capture what it would be like to be totally captive in your body, and what would make life living in such a situation. ( )

Reading "Stuck in Neutral" made a huge impact on me. It's one of the best book I have ever read in my life. This book is about a kid named "Shawn". This kid may be one of the smartest people in the world, but no one knows it because of his Cerebral Palsy(CP). Shawn has some real talent, he can remember everything he has ever heard since he was the age of three. His life is no troll through the park because he has and great "gut feeling" his father is going to kill him. It really makes you appriciate you life and your friends and family. I recommend everyone matture enough to read this book to read it. At times it could be a little vulgar from a christian point of view, but it makes you thank the Lord for giving you a working body.

Stuck in Neutral is about a boy named Shawn McDaniel. He is greatly under the impression that his father is about to kill him. His life is rough because he has to struggle with Cerebal Palsy. This is difficult for him becasue he cannot move or speak. Although he remembers everthing he has ever heard, his life is still in a struggle.

Before i began ready the book i did some back research on Shawns Disease Cerebal Palsy. I found out it had to do with a brain disfuntion that caused no use of movement or acts of speech. To me this book is extremely sad and a true eye opener. throughout the book it shws us shawns fustration toward not being about to comunicate. and no one know that he knew everthing around him.it teaches us not to judge any one. to all be treated equally.
This book Stuck in Neutral impacted my life.

Before i read the book i thought that it was going to be boring, but in the end i actually enjoyed this book. Stuck in Neutral is about a 14 year old boy named Shawn that has a medical condition known as Cerebral Palsy. He talks about his problems in his life and also about his condition. His biggest problem is that he believes that his father wants to kill him. Overall this was a great book. :)

Stuck In Neutral

Book description

Amazon.com (ISBN 0060285192, Hardcover)

Fourteen-year-old Shawn McDaniel loves the taste of smoked oysters and his mother's gentle hugs. Unfortunately, it's impossible for Shawn to feed himself or to hug his mom back. Shawn has cerebral palsy, a condition he has had since birth that has robbed him of all muscle control. He can't walk, talk, or even focus his eyes on his own. But despite all these handicaps, despite the frustration of not being able to communicate, Shawn is still happy to be alive: "Somehow all the things I think about and remember turn to joy... favorite movies... pinecones... chocolate pudding... the scent of Comet in a stainless steel sink.... Life can be great, even for me. Even for me." That is why he panics when he begins to suspect that his father is thinking of killing him. Shawn knows that his father is trying to be kind; he imagines that his son's life is an endless torment. His dad has no idea of the rich life that Shawn lives inside his head. And Shawn, helpless and mute, has no way of telling him.

Stuck in Neutral is a truly unique journey into the mind of a truly unique character. Shawn McDaniel, who is literally trapped in his own body, will serve as a powerful metaphor for teens who feel cornered by circumstances or their own physical shortcomings. Terry Trueman's first-person portrayal of Shawn is made all the more poignant by the fact that Trueman's own son, Henry, also suffers from cerebral palsy. This is an original and moving debut.
