This unassuming publication well demonstrates the appeal of Liam Spencer’s work. A limited edition paperback measuring 21.5cm x 28cm (8.5”v11”), the landscape format is almost essential to accommodate some the artist’s exceptionally wide paintings. The introduction by the art historian and his one time tutor Richard Kendall and the subsequent brief text which accompanies the illustrations provide a background to the artist and his attitude and approach to his work. The text also and includes personal comments from the artist about his work. The text has a pleasantly intimate quality about it; we have no doubt that the writers are personally acquainted with Lim Spencer. The book concludes with a brief biography and list of exhibitions.

This well laid out book is illustrated throughout in full colour, and while the paintings are not presented in strict chronological order overall they lead from 1985 through to 2004, and there is clear evidence of the artist’s progress through his work over this period; from the very free early pieces to the more controlled later paintings. What is also very apparent is his bold use of colour with reds, blues and deep tones predominating, and his increasing interest in painting night scenes. If I am allowed a comment I much prefer the later work, and find the painting M&S (2003) especially appealing with its strong element of design landing it an almost abstract quality.

A most appealing publication which admirable highlights Liam Spencer’s growing talents. ( )
