With this tenth installment, Mome has definitely shown itself to be the premier journal of innovative comic art currently being published. The early issues of Mome were rough, with an over-concentration on the dreary auto-biographical comic narratives that so often confuse pablum with art.

But the contents of volume 10 are something else (almost) entirely, with stellar contributions from true artists such as Jim Woodring, Tim Hensley, Emile Bravo, Tom Kaczynski, and Robert Goodin, along with a spectacular cover by Al Columbia and an outstanding contribution from Dash Shaw, whose work is completely new to me. Shaw's "Look Forward, First Son of Terra Two" is the sort of quirky and visually compelling piece that can make the adventure of reading comics so worthwhile.

If all of these top-notch contributions are somewhat burdened by make-weight offerings from Sophie Crumb and Paul Hornschemeier, the reader can perhaps write those items off as simple nods to Mome's past, which is rapidly (and appropriately) disappearing into the rearview mirror as the journal speeds forward with good prospects for the future, as evidenced by volume 10 and other recent installments full of great art and fresh ideas.
