She's starred in every production since and is sure to get the lead in Romeo and Juliet - there's even a rumor that a drama scout from Northwestern will be in the audience! The latest roses, however, came dead with a cryptic note signed 'The Sun'. Selena is seeing the Sun's sign now every time something bad happens. The accidents are not harmless pranks, either, and Selena has to figure out who's behind the notes before its too late! 'Secret Admirer' was great fun. There's doesn't appear to be much drama in the drama club until Selena starts getting notes. I loved how Stine references Simone Biles' last-minute exit from drama club (see: 'The Prom Queen'), but no one talks about how it was because of the death of several students and the severe wounding of others. The curse surrounding Shadyside definitely comes with some localized amnesia. I liked how Selena doesn't seem to have let her high school star status get to her head, as she's still close with her friend Katy even after her personal transformation. She DOES attribute her weight-loss to simply not eating so much, because that's all there is to it apparently. The drama club second-banana is Allison Pearson, and Selena's rivalry with her is good-natured, probably because she's never lost. She does has a clingy ex, fellow star Danny Morris, and is clueless to the interest that her goofy friend Jake Jacoby has for her. There are a few other characters, but the suspect list is fairly short. What I really loved about this book is... Spoiler incoming! A queer character! Sure, they're the villain, and it's not out-right stated, but the coding is loud and clear. I could use a lot more of that in Shadyside. It's 1996 after all. The closest we've come to a queer character before this is Robbie Barron from 'The Prom Queen', but that was more a stretch on my part based on some good ol' stereotypes. 'Secret Admirer' is legit.
