Yet another wonderful work by gifted author Rhys Hughes, this time a dual-threaded story of spaceā€¦ sort of. To explain much more than that would spoil the thing.

It's not as silly as others in his output, and occasionally gets bogged down a bit with explanations of philosophy or science which are only occasionally important to the plot per se, but the story is filled with the usual entertaining facets of both events and characters.

One last thing: read Michael Bishop's introduction only after reading the novella, wherein you'll learn the story is an homage to Ian Watson and his stories. It will also make more sense after having read the story it introduces. ( )

A sphere, unblemished, black as the wink of a god, smooth and vast, aloof and pure, licked by blind comets and meteorites, featureless as a forgotten dream.

Book description
In an infinity of universes, where everything must happen, there exists one cosmos that is particularly strange. And not only strange but of immeasurable value...

When interstellar politics faces a new kind of metaphysics the outcome of the struggle is always in doubt. Beautiful Sappho Ritsos has an immense responsibility on her shoulders, for she has been charged with the task of saving a solar system made of solid diamond from the most seductive and manipulative space pirate in the history of commerce. Peace on two separate Earths is at stake, the economies of nations and the sanity of humanity itself! But how does all this concern a simple goatherd and a man made of bronze?

The Crystal Cosmos is Rhys Hughes at his inimitable best, high-concept space opera to die for. [blurb]
