I couldn't finish it when it first came out but really loved it the second time around. (  ) Cailin | Nov 30, 2009 |  misslungen: eigentlich ja eine schöne idee: die kindheit des legendären zorro zu erfinden! leider ist das buch aber nur mittelmäßig, stellenweise langweilig, die figuren kommen mir nicht nahe, die geschichte fesselt nicht. zorros liebe zur schönen juliana ist nervig: man ist ja regelrecht froh, als dieses kapitel endlich beendet ist und er juliana los ist. nicht einen moment tat mir unser held leid. am sympathischsten sind die indianer: großartig "weiße eule", auch zorros milchbruder ist eine starke figur. ansonsten wirbeln piraten, zigeuner, sklaven nur so durch die geschichte, und von allen erfährt man nur ein bißchen was. es bleibt alles so blass. der geheimbund genauso wie lafitte, der kurz auftaucht. und am schluss wird es dann immer dünner und man mag schon gar nicht mehr weiterlesen und fragt sich, obwohl man es ja weiß: wo wird das alles enden? also ich finde dieses buch insgesamt wirr. die erzählerin der geschichte, die dann auch noch ab und zu auftaucht, ist richtig schlecht, diese passagen konnte ich kaum ertragen. und was mich am allermeisten gestört hat: der held der geschichte wird immer unglaubwürdiger, seinen kampf für die gerechtigkeit nimmt man ihm einfach nicht ab. er ist selbstverliebt und unsympathisch. ich will helden aber mögen - wenn ich sowas schon lese. also: ich kann das buch nicht empfehlen und zwei sterne bekommt es nur, weil ich weiße eule so gut fand. r1hard | Nov 22, 2009 | Isabel Allende’s Zorro could have been titled The Making of Zorro. Rather than repeating the already-legendary exploits of Zorro, Allende tells the creative and captivating story of how Diego de la Vega became the Zorro we recognize from TV, movies, and books. The story begins before Diego’s birth in Spanish California and travels to Spain, the Caribbean, and New Orleans as Diego grows and develops his swordsmanship and sense of right and wrong. Until this book, my exposure to the Zorro legend was limited to the Antonio Banderas films. Even with that limited background, I was able to see how carefully Allende crafted Diego’s childhood to draw direct links to already-established aspects of his adult career. This was a very plot-driven book, with adventures and challenges moving the characters and story along. There is something here for everyone – pirates, warfare, religious conflict, damsels in distress, prison breaks, high seas adventures, disguises, duels, gypsies, and even Napoleon. It sounds frenetic – and maybe it was – but it kept my full attention through the very last word. Diego’s development as a champion for social justice raised some interesting themes along the way, but Allende kept even those topics quite light. I would definitely recommend this as a fun and attention-grabbing book. I would also recommend the audiobook, especially for a road trip. A good portion of the book revolves around Diego’s travels, so it would be a perfect compliment to a long car ride. The narrator, Blair Brown, is one of my favorites and she did an excellent job with this novel. http://decklededges.wordpress.com/200... Diego de la Vega is born in Alta California, three-quarters Spanish and one quarter Indian. His mother's Indian servant gives birth the same day to Bernardo, and for the rest of their lives the two boys are closer than brothers. Allende builds her hero, Zorro, element by element. His Indian grandmother teaches the boys about nature, spirit, and healing. While finishing his education in Spain, he learns the sword from a master, and the Gypsies he gets to know in Spain teach him sleight-of-hand and showmanship. He learns balance on the ships to and from Spain. More than that, Allende creates compelling characters, Diego, Bernardo, Diego's parents, the sisters Juliana and Isobel, and the pirate Jean Lafitte.
