A small, readable, but nevertheless entertaining memoir. Mills is widely regarded as one of Ireland's foremost political correspondents of the post-WW2 period and his account of the period he worked in is worth examining. His account of the Arms Trial is very readable as he was one of the first to write about the matter after the sackings of Blaney and Haughey by Jack Lynch. He does confess to liking Colley, Lynch and Gibbons to varying degrees, certainly above Haughey, Blaney and Boland, but does try to be critical also in his analysis. To his credit he gives a fair analysis of Col. Michael Hefferon who suffered for his testimony at the hand of Lynch and latter Governments. His bias does shine through regarding Haughey on certain occasions, however, notably the 1977 Manifesto of which he was not privy, and which he dismissed, and the faults of which, and subsequent Governments, he chiefly rectified after 1987.
