Frankenstein I adored the godfather too! I really really didn't expect to like it - it's not my thing at all but I got so hooked. 139. The Godfather by Mario Puzo. You know..I appreciate "scholarly literature", stuff that was groundbreaking in its technique or whatever. But if the story isn't interesting, my heart just isn't in it. It's kind of like modern art..I mean I get it, it's just not very moving. Impressive, but not ... just started The Godfather by Mario Puzo. I've developed this amazing new system to pick what I read next- find my bookshelf with the least amount of books unread. I just wanted to comment on two of your books.The GodfatherThis is a case of without the book their would have been no movie.This movie would have never been made without the success of the novel.I heard Dicks book that became Bladerunner and the film is not at all like the book ... The Godfather now has 2,888 books on LT, prestty good growth for a half year. ... about the folks winning the Nobel Prizes one year. The Man was also OK (bad touchstone).
Of Puzo, I've only read The Godfather and The Dark Arena. Liked the former. Didn't like the latter.

I bought The Godfather at a used book store, also because of the 1001 list.
Finally, Pink Slip I bought at a book outlet sale, just because it appealed to me. ... I finished it, which is a good sign and I mildly enjoyed it. Just know what you're getting yourself into :)
#32 was The Godfather, which I enjoyed a lot more than I thought I would. The story is just solid. Excellently told, engaging characters and hasn't aged a bit. Definitely recommend ... Possession:A Romance by A.S. Byatt
The Godfather by Mario Puzo #4 -- Interesting . . . except that they included Part II of The Godfather in the listing of gangster movies, in addition to part I. (I've never seen either, so couldn't tell you which was better.)
All in all, I was surprised at how many of those, on all of the lists, that I haven't seen. Of ... I've read The Godfather. Surely most of you have. ... part) is a good film. I actually find them pompous, badly paced, and down right boring.
Liked the books, though. Read both The Godfather and The Sicilian multiple times when I was younger.

Finished Death in Venice & The godfather over the weekend. Really didn't like my first Thomas Mann novel, I felt there were too many long sentences and didn't find the story particularly interesting. The godfather on the other hand I loved.

Nickelini in Made into a Movie : When the movies are better than the books or vice versa (Aug 16, 2007, 6:24pm) I almost always prefer the book to the movie, but now I see that there are lots of exceptions, as detailed here (The Godfather, to name just one).
I thought the movie version of Frida was much better than the book by Hayden Herrera. I also had the same opinion of The Hours, by Michael ... #39, MichaelMenche, The Godfather movie was in a completely different class from the book, in my opinion. The movies (1 & 2, not 3) are brilliant; the book is just a run-of-the-mill Mafia story.

#127, fuzzy_patters, I haven't read The Godfather since it came out in paperback, but this is one case where the movie(s) are much, much better than the book. The movies (1 & 2, anyway) are brilliant; the ... I gave up on Poland by James Michener. I just could not get into it. I am currently about 130 pages into The Godfather by Mario Puzo. I am liking it a lot better. It has been a long time since I have seen the movie so the book feels new to me. ... I read in about 3 hours.
For older 20th century books on the list, Fear of Flying, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, the Godfather and the Shining were all enjoyable and manageable (although I'm not sure that Fear of Flying has stood the test of time).
As for the pre-1900 books on ... I don't think the recipe was given in the novel, but the scene in The Godfather film where Clemenza shows Michael how to make the sauce always makes me crave Italian. It was that infamous The Godfather page! I nearly wore it out, the book automatically fell open there. I had never seen a description of the part of the male that I had never seen, let alone what might be done with such. ... teenage years. I may have been one of the few boys to have ever read a Jackie Collins book.
I didn't get around to The Godfather until I was 17, so that didn't "learn" me anything.
Oh, and I did read Flowers in the Attic around the age of 13 or so.
I think I turned out fairly ... ... I was in the 7th grade. I dug it out of the garbage and finished it. Good thing she didn't know about the sex scenes in The Godfather! Mostly she left me alone with my reading and I turned out only a little weird. ... between the book and a movie helps to appreciate each one individually and I did find that having the book's background in The Godfather filled in what could have been some puzzling gaps in the movie's storyline.

Like kageeh, I may be showing my age here and, like the EW writer's colleagues, I vividly remember The Godfather and can guess what the infamous p. 27 is (although there were other "good" parts too). I don't know how much I learned from Lady Chatterley's Lover because I found it such an ... ... Lost, Of Mice and Men, Heart of Darkness (classics?), Prince of Tides, Accidental Tourist (contemporary fiction?), Godfather (crime fiction?), Shogun, Sounder (historical fiction?), Jaws (horror?), Snow Falling on Cedars (mystery?), Full Disclosure (suspense?), The Firm, Red ... ... Omen from. And not a brilliant novel, either - it's one of those cases where the movie is a lot better than the book (The Godfather is another one).
Steven Spielberg did a brilliant job of adapting Jaws to the screen, cutting out some of Benchley's unneeded longeurs (the affair ... ... foreign-ness of some of the language though, this is still a strikingly written page-turner of a high order(sort of The Godfather meets Shantaram), and I'm already curious as to what the critical reaction to it will be when it's published in the US in January.

In agreement with others, The Godfather was a better film than a book, and while I liked the story of Brokeback Mountain, I think the film improved upon it.
While it wasn't a bad Austen ... Jaws, The Godfather and The Third Man were all better movies than the works on which they were based, imho.
