I remember this one from when I was little. I think I liked it then, and I like it now. It’s short and direct and satisfying. The gun, even though it’s a cork gun, is kind of shocking to see in a picture book now. ( )

This story is written in first person, about a little boy who was afraid of a nightmare in his closet. But one night he decided to take care of the thing once and for all. He put on his helmet and grabbed his gun and faced his nemesis. He ends up winning over a whiny, timid roommate.

When the nightmare comes out of the closet, the boy shoots him. The nightmare begins to cry, so the boy takes his hand, tucks him into bed, and goes to sleep with him. At the end of the book, another nightmare is shown coming out of the closet. This book could be used when teaching how to get over fears.

A little boy has a sneaking suspicion that he has a monster (nightmare) in his closet.

The boy grabs his toy-rifle and waits for the monster. After teaching the monster a lesson, he realizes that his nightmare is not what it appears to be.

A classic story with a hidden lesson. A children's hall of famer. ( )
