Polystom didn't really grab me until the ending, then it blew my mind. Still, it could have been better, I think. I'm reading Polystom now and I'm just about to finish that. I also read On, which I thought was really good and refreshing. I just ordered The Snow, can't wait to get started on that too! I'm just at the end of Polystom now and I really enjoyed it so far! Can't wait to finish it!! I'm at the end of Polystom by Adam Roberts and it's really good! It's getting weird and mysterious, which is a delicious twist! ^^
I read On by the same author and that one had a brilliant twist at the end, so I was excited when I found this book on sale! Hasn't disappointed me yet...
... Following up avaland's suggestions for Cliff above
Geoff Ryman's Air, or, Have not have
Adam Roberts's Polystom and others
Graham Joyce's The Facts Of Life and others (fantasy).
I would definitely add Morrow's The Last Witchfinder (tangentially SF in the same was as Stephens ... Polystom definitely throws you a curveball later on, don't worry.
I just read Gradisil last night, too. Decent, with one slow bit. I'm reading Polystom now. Not sure where it is going. The bulk of the story so far is merely dealing with the main character and his relationship with his wife. I hope it widens its scope.... ... having a physical effect like that on me. So, an uncomfortable experience to read (for some), but worth the effort.
Polystom is more intellectual. I liked the strange physics of the setting. The book is really a game that Roberts is playing with the reader. Many of his books have that ... Adam lives! :)
I have Polystom and Gradisil to have a look at in the near future, too. Borrowing Stone (which I liked more than Snow) I realised I had read it before, and forgotten about it. One of those 'only ever read one book by the author' so don't remember them, types of thing.
... avaland, jargoneer,
Roberts' Polystom has a heavily class-ridden society - he notes on an associated web site that he had in mind the increasing use of private aircraft by the wealthy in our world.
SimonW11,
As you note, the Culture is nominally economically classless. That is ... Yes I have heard of him and have read a couple of his books.
I have:
Salt
On
Stone
The Snow
Polystom
Jupiter Magnified (Collection of Short Stories)
Non-Fiction:
Science Fiction
I have read Salt, On and Stone so far, which were the first 3 books he published (haiku anyone ? ... ... Sterling..and Iain Banks also, by the way) at the bookstore. I thought his Salt excellent; my husband liked Stone and Polystom best. Adam is probably getting his best US sales from his parodies like Sellamillion. Grimwood has an actual US publisher but I think he is still ...
