Sorry, I have no runner-ups; ... I just reread Sarah by JT LeRoy that made a big impact on me back in 2002, with some hesitation. Since I last read this jet black fairytale of child prostitution, (told in a starry eyed manner as if it were a trip to the wrong Oz) LeRoy has been unveiled as a literary persona. Which made me worried ... ...

I didn't originally have this on the list, but I was so disappointed in sarah by Marek Halter that several of you suggested this one. Many many thanks. I'm not going to write a formal review on this one since 126 people already have, but I ... ... done this before for you, but some of my favorite Newbery winners are A Wrinkle in Time, The Giver, Walk Two Moons, Sarah, Plain, and Tall, The Hero and the Crown, Jacob Have I Loved, The Bridge to Terabithia, and The Witch of Blackbird Pond. Don't even get me started on the ... ... couldn't finish. I loved his Book of Abraham and have it on my short list for re-reads. But I think after finishing Sarah last night, I finally have figured out what the problem is. This is not your parents' or your Sunday School teacher's bible story. Holy Cow - An Indian Adventure by Sarah Macdonald ... very curious and kept asking what I was laughing about. Unfortunately, probably not appropriate for a twelve year old. Sarah Vowell is also very funny in a similar way. A Confederacy of Dunces is far and away the funniest book I have ever read.
