When I read this back in high school, I hated it. I reread it a couple of years ago after reading The Eyre Affair-I realized I didn't remember enough about the plot of the original to get when Fforde was making something up. Since then, I've appreciated the story much more. Sometimes, you have ...

re #113 DoB - I hope you like The Eyre Affair! Jasper Fforde is one of those authors that as soon as he puts out a book I have to go get it right away. The Eyre Affair is hilarious, and I think I may have to go re-read it again now. The friendly UPS guy brought me Speak, Memory today. So ...

23. The Eyre Affair Fairly entertaining with a particularly good ending. I won't read the sequels, but it was a fun world (similar to ours but set in England with time travel and high interest in literary classics) that Fforde created.

I'll jump in the conversation regarding The Eyre Affair. I'm reading it now and it is slow and cumbersome, but interesting enough to keep me reading.

I noticed the book The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde is noted on quite a few LT libraries so I thought I'd give this one a try. Thus, far, I'm enjoying it. After this, I'm going to read Half a Yellow Sun..another book highly recommended by many LT folk.

Jasper Fforde! Both the Thursday Next series and the Nursery Crime series. If you enjoy Pratchett, I think you'll love these.

... of her dreams and a man rides through jaran, but I have never been able to get in any other Kate Elliot books Eyre Affair and other Thursday Next book by Jasper Fforde

... They are very pretty! 59- What do you think of Howl's Moving Castle so far, K? I really love that book. I finished The Eyre Affair! It was really good, so much fun! I loved all the little references to different books. It was very funny. :)

I will have to look for Jenna Starborn, too. Like drneutron, I am a fan of both Jane Eyre and The Eyre Affair.

I walked into the library to drop off some books and cds, but I walked out with: Atonement The Eyre Affair The Dark is Rising (containing all five books) The Book of Air and Shadows Dream Lucky The Black Cauldron Simple Prayers Grammar Snobs are Great Big Meanies (audiobook) ...

... Bunnies is a mixture of fantasy, noir detective mystery and comedy. I liked it for most of the same reasons I liked The Eyre Affair, although Rankin's and Fforde's approaches to comedy are somewhat different.

... for the recommendation on Jenna Starborn! I'm going to the library today, so I'll be looking for that book along with The Eyre Affair. I'm almost done with Hollow Chocolate Bunnies, so I'll be posting my thoughts on that soon.

Jane Eyre is a long time favorite of mine as well! I second drneutron's recommendation of The Eyre Affair, lots of fun. Also, for a pretty faithful SF retell, try Jenna Starborn by Sharon Shinn. I also am interested on your take on Hollow Chocolate Bunnies. Amazon keeps recommending it ...

dcozy in Book talk : New to reading world (Jul 12, 2008, 6:59pm)

Doesn't the pleasure (if one finds the book pleasurable) of The Eyre Affair depend largely on one's familiarity with classic literature? If one is, like the initiator of this thread, "new to reading world," would one enjoy them?

... why I was pronouncing it that way, but it took a while before I started saying it the right way. Right now I'm reading The Eyre Affair, which I really like so far! It's very funny.

... Opera and The Serpent Gift primarily. There are a couple others I'm progressing through very slowly. I think I'll get The Eyre Affair sometime soon. ETA: The Host finally came in on my library hold list, so I'll be starting that no later than Saturday.

21. The Eyre Affair 22. Lean Mean Thirteen 23. Summer Blowout 24. Queen's Fool 25. Virgin's Lover

Finished The Eyre Affair last night. I liked it, but I've got a bunch of other stuff on deck, so it'll probably be a month or two before I get to the next one. Next up is Lean Mean Thirteen which I'll probably finish in a day, they're just fun, fast reads.

The first one about the audience participation at Shakespeare is The Eyre Affair but the play is Richard III.

For new readers and readers who just don't know what they're in the mood for, I always suggest Jasper Fforde's Eyre Affair. It definitely falls into the light-hearted range. It's a fantasy/fairy tale mystery. The supposed setting is 1980's Great Britain. The book uses characters form classic ...

Good idea foggi! Currently participating in the reread of Deathly Hallows, and doing first time reads of The Eyre Affair and Queen's Fool. I'm also one chapter away from the end of Agnes Grey, so I should be done with that by 6ish. Finished with Agnes, moving on to The Tenant of Wildfe ...

The Eyre Affair is one of my all-time favorites. Right now I've just finished Murder with Puffins, which was rather disappointing, and started The Princes of Ireland while I wait for my wife to finish I Shall not Want.

It has to be one of the Thursday Next books, but I'm not sure which one. Is it The Eyre Affair?

... there wasn't any new Fforde coming out this summer? Must I reread? Fforde books have been a summer staple for me since The Eyre Affair.

I liked The Eyre Affair. It was amusing and entertaining, but it didn't leave me dying for the next book. I can see how all of the cute little gimmicks might get tireseome, but I did find it all to be a lot of fun. I will probably continue on, but not right away. There is just way too much in my T ...

I started Jane Eyre today. I have Fair and Tender Ladies and The Eyre Affair on Mt. TBR and thought I'd enjoy them more if I read the classic for background. I didn't expect to like this, but the Preface to the Second Edition, dedicating it to Thackeray, was stunning!

You weren't asking me, but I reviewed The Eyre Affair along with Fforde's The Big Over Easy a few years back. I found both of them pleasant enough nonsense, but I certainly never wanted to read anything else by this author. The books seem to me to be all about the cute little gimmicks Fforde ...

Well, I guess the obvious answer is The Eyre Affair and Lost in a good book (come on-the Cheshire cat as a librarian-what could be better?). But since most of the fiction I read is dystopian, I think I'd want to stay clear of those. I'll stick with The Eyre Affair-there's something ...

I read Jane Eyre a year or two before reading The Eyre Affair and I was glad I had read it, given its centrality to the plot of the book. I loved how there was an alternate ending to Jane Eyre as "originally" written in Fforde's book & how Thursday changed things to the present case. Such ...

I read Jane Eyre after I read The Eyre Affair. Whenever I told my women friends that I was reading Jane Eyre they all said how much they enjoyed reading it. I enjoyed reading it too.
