... to books that I have ambivalently reviewed than to the ones that I wholeheartedly love. For instance, the novels of Per Petterson, which I love for how he builds a world solidly like sculpture, in the details like how the father's ears in To Siberia are so cold they are white, and the ...

To Siberia by Per Petterson could be described as the story of a girl who is emotionally closest to her brother and, in some way, in love with him - if you take out the sexual connotations of that - and who has parents who are distant or become so by not standing up for her. He's not a perfect ...

I've been in Denmark and Norway, though dreaming with Per Petterson's heroine of going To Siberia (which unfortunately isn't resolved correctly by infosense even if I had ":A Novel" as their official page has it. Late at night before falling asleep I have been hanging out in India, India: A His ...

Hi Kjellica. I was finally able to get To Siberia by Per Petterson after having it on hold at the library for months. I am still absorbing it, but it is very good. His writing from the point of view of a girl/woman is pretty convincing. I am trying to use it as a model for setting up scenes ...

Finished Out Stealing Horses last night. What an interesting book. Kinda anticlimactic, but I think the whole thing just needs to sink in a bit more before I should say much else about it. I'd be interested to hear what others thought about it too. oops, typo

A lot of Out Stealing Horses by Per Petterson takes place in northern Norway, and the book has a lovely sense of place, among other features.

... Disney movie starring Bette Davis is based on the book -- scared me witless as a kid. This morning, I also started Out Stealing Horses by Per Petterson. Very good so far. I picked up First Among Sequels by Jasper Fforde in audiobook format at the library today, which means I'll be ...

Jeg forbanner tidens elv by Per Petterson: 226 pages 12058 + 226 = 12284 15440 - 12284 = 3256 pages left Out Stealing Horses (Norwegian: "Ut og stjæle hester") is a better novel than "Jeg forbanner tidens elv", in my opinion. I'm not sure if it is translated into English yet.

The Angel of Grozny about the war in Chechnya. I'm definitely getting an education about it. Out Stealing Horses well written, but the foreshadowing seems very heavy handed. Only 40 pages in, so may learn to love it.

Here's my review of #15, Out Stealing Horses: If I say very much at all about the plot, it will ruin it for you. The narrator and main character of the book is a 67-year-old Norwegian man, Trond, who has just moved to a little cabin in the country to be alone, except for his dog, Lyra. The ...

I'm one of the people who loved Out Stealing Horses, which I admittedly bought because I loved the title. It is certainly melancholy, but I guess I'm one of those people who likes melancholy. Interesting comments on Out Stealing Horses,Joyce. I'd heard so many good things about it, and I know my mother has enjoyed other Scandinavian literature (she introduced me to Sigrid Unset) so I gave her this book for Christmas. She told me she enjoyed it, and now I have it here to read. I ...
