This biography of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, best known for his successful defense of Little Round Top in the Battle of Gettysburg, attempts to show what an unlikely war hero this man was. A quiet and scholarly professor at Bowdoin College (Brunswick, Maine) when the American Civil War broke out, he gave up his well-paid teaching position to enlist and raise up the 20th Maine. Under his leadership, this cohort fought in some of the worst battles of the war, including Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Petersburg, and Five Forks. After the war, Chamberlain went on to become one of its most successful veterans. He served as governor of Maine and then became president of Bowdoin College, where he taught classes in every subject but math. no reviews | add a review
Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0807820202, Hardcover)This remarkable biography traces the life and times of Joshua L. Chamberlain, the professor-turned-soldier who led the Twentieth Maine Regiment to glory at Gettysburg, earned a battlefield promotion to brigadier general from Ulysses S. Grant at Petersburg, and was wounded six times during the course of the Civil War. Chosen to accept the formal Confederate surrender at Appomattox, Chamberlain endeared himself to succeeding generations with his unforgettable salutation of Robert E. Lee's vanquished army. After the war, he went on to serve four terms as governor of his home state of Maine and later became president of Bowdoin College. He wrote prolifically about the war, including The Passing of the Armies, a classic account of the final campaign of the Army of the Potomac.(retrieved from Amazon Tue, 05 Jan 2010 21:35:08 -0500) The first test round has been closed.
