BOOK 88 The Underneath by Kathi Appelt This is such a well written book with such mature themes, it doesn't seem like a kids book at all, despite the simple language and the illustrations. I'm still not sure what I think of it, but it's worth reading. 3 1/2 Stars

... - Columbine and Speak, Memory; Fiction - Wizard of the Crow and Doomsday Book; Young Adult - The Hunger Games and The Underneath. I am not sure I am even happy with those choices, but it's a start. Does that help?

... for the recommendations of the Dowd books. I will look for them. And again, a huge thank you for the recommendation of The Underneath.

Stasia, 9 out of 10 books recommended, I'd say you had a great reading week! I've heard so many good things about The Underneath, but I hadn't heard of The Wednesday Wars. I'll be on the lookout now for both of them. Thanks and happy reading this week!

The Wednesday Wars sounds good. I'll add it to the list. The Underneath has been on the list for awhile. I've been wondering if the Benedict Society books were any good. I look at them whenever I'm in the YA section and always consider buying them.

So glad that you enjoyed The underneath, it deserves a wide readership regardless that it's junior fiction. It's also one of my memorable reads of the year. I also really liked The Wednesday Wars. If you want to read an award winning YA that features a bog person, Siobhan Dowd's fantastic Bog ...

The Underneath by Kathi Appelt

I loved The Underneath for its sadness and the beauty of the storytelling.

The Underneath by Kathi Appelt ***1/2 This is the kind of book that adults want children to like. It's lyrical and magical, but also violent and depressing. The "happy" ending isn't all that happy or all that believable. From the book jacket, you would think it's a story about the ...

I found The Underneath by Kathy Appelt really difficult...it got so many great reviews and awards, and I just thought it very depressing. I seem to be in a minority, though.

The Giver; recently The Underneath. Both kids books, both read when I was an adult. Makes me wonder what kids make of them...

... a novel-length book by her, but I loved Library Lion! I'm still undecided as to what I should read next. I'm afraid The Underneath is going to be a downer. Maybe I will do some more comfort reading before I tackle that one.

... what I read yesterday. I will finish up the last few pages today, but haven't decided what I'm reading next. Probably The Underneath, which I've had out of the library for a while.

I just finished The Underneath which I did not think I would like because I enjoy the crazy messed up YA novels, but I read this in one sitting. I also finished Peeled as well. Trying to read some "normal" books as I am a teacher who does book talks every month or so and try to have a balance ...

I haven't read The Underneath, but I remember being a child and reading sad animal stories. I LOVED sad animal stories. My mother asked me once, while I was reading Beautiful Joe, how I could stand it because it was so sad, and I didn't understand what bothered her about it. Now, as an adult, ...
