I liked Dies the Fire and I have The Protector's War on my TBR pile. I picked up a copy of Conquistador as well. It is set in a different universe and was vastly underwhelmed by it.
I have found when reading his books you have to be good at the whole suspension of disbelief thing. His ... Dies the Fire: A Novel of the Change by S. M. Summer Knight by Jim Butcher, #4 in the Harry Dresden series
On The Beach by Nevil Shute, it's unforgiveable that I've never read this story
I'm in 1998 about 2 months after the "event" in Dies The Fire which I am rereading. After that, I think I'll go On the Beach which I believe is set in the 50's (and unbelievably I've never read). ... with a rather obvious problem often overlooked in many other disaster novels - the bodies.
I'm going to add Stirling's Dies the Fire to my TBR list, as I see it recommended a couple of times here. Ditto Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang (which is a lovely title).

Stirling works like Dies the Fire and Peshawar Lancers but then you L. Sprague de Camp and Lest Darkness Fall and that is a great book, with no magic, except for Martin Padway ... ... then we currently have. And to be in the future must have more science. Then we have S.M. Stirling with such works like Dies the Fire and Island in the Sea of Time where there has to have been some science to cause an event that leaves our heroes in a world where technology is fading.
So ... No 132 I have read both the Nantucket and the Dies the fire series, with the fourth of the latter still to read. I also enjoyed the one set in India whose name escapes me. Two back to back readers of S.M. Stirling I have read the first four in the Dies the Fire series also, but am torn between categorizing them as Science Fiction or Fantasy, so I credit both genre's
I am not sure if I like this current series better than the Nantucket series. I think Nantucke ... ... book isn't especially sci-fish to me.
I've seen on some reviews statements that there are more books to the series than Dies the Fire, The Protector's War, Meeting at Corvallis, Sunrise Lands and The Scourge of God. However, I looked at the books on indigo.ca, and they don't seem ... Wondering how I'd survive the Change in S. M. Stirling's series starting with Dies The Fire. At the moment I'm reading The Protector's War.
I don't thing I'd do as well as the characters he's created. ... historical anymore. The Man In the High Castle by Philip K. Dick is a good one. Another more popular right now is the Dies the Fire trilogy by S.M. Stirling, which I've enjoyed. The Yiddish Policeman's Union is still on my TBR list. I have been hooked since the first book. It can be viewed as Science Fiction, Fantasy or Alternate History.
The basic premise is this. On a day in 1998, ... I gave up on Dies the Fire by S.M. Stirling after about 40-50 pages. I could tell it just wasn't going to be my thing and the writing style was going to annoy the h*ll out of me.
I'm reading Misfortune by Wesley Stace and enjoying it, but it's a hardcover so I can't take it on the ... Some of my favorites have already been mentioned. I enjoyed S. M. Stirling's Dies the Fire. Dies the Fire by S.M. Stirling #3 There were quite a few lucky coincidences in Dies the Fire, but I guess I've come to expect that from a lot of fantasy-type books. And #4 I love The Dark Tower!
And as to the original list, I seriously think I've read The King Awakes and its sequel and I've been trying to remember its ... Wow, that's a lot of books. I did start reading Dies the Fire awhile back, but couldn't get into it; there wasn't enough characterization for me, and there were too many lucky coincidences for my taste.
