Nice comments on City of Thieves and you are right on the money with describing it as "cinematic". I felt exactly the same way. No game tonight, so it's just us!! Finished City of Thieves today. Even though the underlying story included the siege of Leningrad during WWII and partisans out in the countryside fighting and losing to Nazis (and all the expected atrocities of war) it was still a fun, and even funny, thriller of a book with three very appealing ... ... at those A shelves. Just started City of Thieves by David Benioff. The setting is Leningrad during the siege. Only 50 pages in but I feel completelty immersed in the setting. Very cinematic...cold and gray coupled with crushing desperation, but also ... #252: Some nice reads there. I am adding City of Thieves and Kensuke's Kingdom to Planet TBR. I finished City of Thieves by David Benioff and I cannot praise it enough! Excellent book! Berly- I added The Twin to the wishlist. It sounds very good. I have to rave about City of Thieves,another excellent read! ... I try to do the same in my mini-reviews, unless I inadvertently stumble and you are suddenly there, to right my ship.
No, City of Thieves is not YA. I finished it today and it is truly an excellent story. Benioff is a major talent! ... to write in general, so thought, "Why am I giving myself this work?" and stopped requesting until just recently.
Re: City of Thieves, I don't know, Mark... It's a YA book, right? It's an important part of history that I haven't read very much about, but after The Boy in the Striped Paja ... I'm just finishing up City of Thieves and it's been a marvel. I highly recommend it. I'll post a short review on my challenge. Will be starting Await Your Reply an ER book I've been sitting on for awhile. I love LT dearly but what an avalanche of books!! David Benioff is a fine writer and here is a couple short passages from City of Thieves:

I will have to give City of Thieves a try at some point in time. I have seen it kicked about LT for quite a while now so I think across the board it has been pretty well received. I liked The Madonnas of Leningrad but it was a struggle to stay focused on the book. I was really ... Hi Belva - Madonnas was a good read but I liked City of Thieves better. It also takes place during the siege of Leningrad but is a very different story. ... that it's not too gory and funny. You make it sound good, and Belva's quote does seem to back you up.

I discovered Madonnas mentioned in a LT review of City of Thieves. I found it and enjoyed it greatly but for whatever reason, I liked City of Thieves more. Both take place during the siege of Leningrad and both are good stories, but they are very different. Basically ... A nice surprise from an LT Angel:

Been reading City of Thieves and enjoying it. Next up I think is The Story of Edgar Sawtelle the newest Oprah pick. I hear its great. I'm reading Dearest Anne this week. I'll be starting another book in a day or two, probably City of Thieves. Just finished City of Thieves by David Benioff. It was a great read.
