There's a short story in looking for jake which fits and it would add a certain weirdness to the more traditional story (yes it's much weirder than sitting in a kitchn sink). The rest of the stories are all non-epistolary though. ... that: M.R. James wrote about a few, and if you can't find his writings, surprisingly similar, a few stories can be found looking for Jake ... scientist meets the aliens set against a background of the universe coming to an end. Actually it's really quite good.
looking for jake dark/weird sf horror short stories some in the style of MR James' classics, others just odd. Touches of Michael Marshall Smith there too. ... so well. Until we met Forbidden Planet. SO so dangerous shop.

I have always been a big fan of Mieville's writing style and really enjoy his books. clfisha, I haven't finished City yet but I am enjoying it. I still haven't read Looking for Jake though I've probably read some of the stories in anthologies and such.

I do love his ideas & his polictical themes they add an extra edge to his fantasy. Have you tried his short story book Looking for Jake? It has mixed reviews but I heartily enjoyed it.

Yes there was definitely a Lovecraftian air to a few of the stories in Looking For Jake but I was mainly referring to his writing in Perdido Street Station. Whilst Lovecraft wasn't the only influence I thought it was clear to see in the work.
... is obviously Lovecraft influences in his early writing."
You're referring, I take it, to a number of the stories in Looking for Jake? There are a couple in there which go way past 'influenced' and skip directly to 'homage'.
Indeed, I recall those being some of the stories I enjoyed ... ... my expectations were probably set too high. Expectations duly lowered, I will take dukedom_enough's recommendation and try Looking for Jake. Thanks! timjones,
You could sample his alternate mode, I think, in some of the stories in Looking for Jake, without waiting for the new novel.
I'm rather a fan of his invention - don't know if that's what you mean by grotesquerie. There will definitely be people for whom the conceit of the new ... ... seeing how we don't have that sound. I haven't even started reading it and I'm already nitpicking. Oh, dear.)

#31 Looking for Jake by China Miélville (October): This collection of short stories takes fantasy to levels I never imagined and have not read before. Some of the tales ... ... level of understanding that I like.
There are two authors that I'd like to recommend as well though: China Miéville's Looking for Jake is awesome and any short story collection by Haruki Murakami (they're all wonderful but I do especially like the new one Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman.)
