Excellent book about six turtles sitting “still as stones” on a log while animals move around them. The book is full of action words (some rhyming and alliteration). This book is good for story time and reading the action words is exciting and you can have a lot of fun with them. (“glide, slide, dash, splash”)

The art is bright and beautiful. There is lots going on to look at and many things around the pond can be pointed out to young readers that are not mentioned in the book.

At the end of the book there are notes from the author where you can see her tree-house where she observes animals around her pond. There is also a page on making textures on paper with different objects. ( )

This is a lower level children’s book that would be fun to use in the lower elementary grades. Story begins with several turtles sitting on a log, and the story is based around what is going on around the turtles. The story only contains nouns and verbs (example: birds fly, bugs crawl). It would be a great book to use when learning sentence structure or with science. It would also be a good book to put movement and music with because it has a lot of action words. The back of the book also contains a science journal entry from the author, which includes a description of her “tree house” where she observed all the animals. I rated this book a 4 out of 5 because it would be hard to incorporate into a higher level classroom; however, it would be a really great book for the lower levels. ( )
