... Eastern magical realism, The Last of the Angels by Fadhil al-Azzawi set in 1950s Iraq.
The last genre book I read was The Steel Remains by Richard Morgan. Very dark, violent fantasy. Really loved it, and can't wait for the next one.
Happy Holidays too ! I thought The Steel Remains was good, but not as good as it was hyped. I finished The Steel Remains by Richard Morgan and I loved it, though there seemed to be a distinct lack of driving narrative, more character studies of 3 unusual people. Thought Egar's character and purpose a bit weak. Seems to be some satire in there too. Can't wait for the next one.

Will ... I am now reading The Steel Remains by Richard Morgan. So far I am enjoying it. Loved his SF stuff, and got the PB from the UK for this book. ... she can get her act together and write more in the future.
Now reading a noirsh, hardboiled fantasy by Richard Morgan The Steel Remains . Loved his SF stuff an and enjoying this so far.
The Steel Remains ... a collection of his columns from SFX magazine, plus assorted other non-fiction pieces. It's Langford, nuff said.
54. The Steel Remains, Richard Morgan - fantasy that caused a big splash on publication but isn't actually all that remarkable - Moorcock meets noir.
55. The Handmaid's Tale ... The Steel Remains by Richard Morgan. Languishing on mount tbr. Richard Morgan tried his hand at fantasy with The Steel Remains and I think he did quite well. The main character is a gay warrior. There are some fairly explicit sex scenes (well, to me at least). There's also lots of gore though. As with his sci fi, Morgan never shies away from brutality.
... ... Open Your Eyes, a surreal space opera novella by Paul Jessup from Apex Publications. Pretty good. Currently reading The Steel Remains, Richard Morgan. I'll tackle the Delany after that. July 20
I'm reading The Steel Remains by Richard Morgan. I'm enjoying it so far but am getting increasingly irritated at the constant use of the f*ing word. Sometimes it makes sense to use it as a curse word but the author insists on doing it every other sentence, in thought and dialogue, and ... ... series. I got an Australian trade paperback. It is still in HC in the US.
From the Book Depository in the UK
The Steel Remains by Richard Morgan, Fantasy Noir
This is the start of a new series and his first fantasy. I can't wait to see his gritty, edgy, noirish take on fantasy. ... ... enough there for me to really enjoy or endorse. ... so keep that in mind regarding my recs!
Anyway-- want to add:
The Steel Remains by Richard K. Morgan

Crusade by Anselm Audley, another stinker, but I have books 1 & 2
Steel Remains by Richard Morgan, His first fantasy, PB it still HC here
The Spies of Sobeck by Paul Doherty, book 7 in his Egyptian mystery ... #22 Not sure. Not read it . Only read his Altered Carbon and Black Man - altho I do own Broken Angels. (And The Steel Remains too.) 79. Graceling by Kristin Cashore
80. The Steel Remains by Richard K. Morgan

82. Dead Silence by Randy Wayne White
83. Sandry's Book by Tamora Pierce
84. Tris's Book by Tamora Pierce
85. Daja's Book by Tamora Pierce
86. Briar's Book by Ta ... #26 - Thanks for the review of The Steel Remains. I was instantly hooked by Morgan when I read Altered Carbon. I owe a great debt of gratitude to whoever left their dogeared copy lying around on the staff room table so that I could pinch it! I've since listened, rather than read, to all the ... Bit of a break there while I read my twentieth book of the year - starting a new job will do that!
20) The Steel Remains - Richard Morgan
"I have read a large number of reviews that indicate Richard Morgan is doing something fresh and new with this, his first book in a fantasy trilogy. Howev ... ... and Macedonian Imperialism by John R. Ellis

Eclipse 2: New Science Fiction and Fantasy by Jonathan Stra ... ... stories that Jonathan gets from writers. Does he have a lien on their first born children?
Read Richard K. Morgan's The Steel Remains. Love his writing, but I am getting a bit annoyed with his really unlikable characters.
Then a lot of non-fiction from Outliers and How We Decide ... ... - the eagle's prohecy
Simon Scarrow - the eagle in the sand
Simon Scarrow - centurion
Richard Morgan - Steel remains
Scott Lynch - The Lies of Locke Lamora
Scott Lynch - Red Seas under Red Skies
Brian Ruckley - Winterbirth ... ... Man (US Title - "Thirteen"), both written by one of my favourite authors, Richard K. Morgan.
I currently have Morgan's The Steel Remains, also read by Vance, but while I love 'hard' sci-fi, fantasy leaves me cold; so I'm approaching that one with caution. I also have Vance reading, The Girl ... Richard Morgan's The Steel Remains is supposed to be a gritty military fantasy but I haven't read it yet.
K.J. Parker's Engineer Trilogy might fit the bill as well. ... books, though, there is one author who has been consistently jumping my queues recently, and that is Richard Morgan. Even The Steel Remains jumped the queue, and I'm not a huge fantasy fan by any means. Currently reading: The Steel Remains, by Richard Morgan. I really enjoyed Black Man, so I thought I'd give this, his first fantasy, a try even though I'm not a big fantasy reader. I'm 150 pages in; first thoughts: cor, there's a lot of shagging, isn't there!
Waiting to be read: in a most ... Damn. I need to get a copy of the new MacLeod. I was going to buy it in Waterstone's a couple of days ago - that and The Steel Remains (it was on offer at £9.99). But then I decided I'd wait for the paperback of the Morgan... and so didn't buy the MacLeod either. I've seen advance reviews of The Steel Remains which are approving (and by people whose views I trust). Plus, of course, there's his back-catalogue to consider-- oh, wait: you could say the same of George RR Martin...
"Proper" reviewers = the ones you'd find in Interzone, Strange horizons, ... ... by Trudi Canavan outsells them ten to one...
There are some good high fantasies out there - Richard K. Morgan's The Steel Remains promises to be worth reading. I've also heard good things of Steph Swainston and K.J. Parker, although I've never read either.
Um, I just ... ... coming out this year that's on my wishlist:
House of Suns, Alastair Reynolds
The Hidden World, Paul Park
The Steel Remains, Richard K. Morgan
Kéthani, Eric Brown
Omega, Christopher Evans (PS Publishing)
The Night Sessions, Ken MacLeod
Black & White, ...
