... Novik. After that I'm not sure what the order will be, but the rest of the haul is:
Lavinia by Ursula K. Le Guin
The Other Wind by Ursula K. Le Guin
Once Upon a Time in the North by Philip Pullman
The Book of Air and Shadows by Michael Gruber
Here Be Dragons by S ... ... too, as can be seen by some of my book choices:
Clouds of Witness made me think of MrsLee
A Song for Arbonne and
The Other Wind both made me think of Busifer
The Road brought Clamairy to mind 'cause she'd mentioned reading it awhile ago
Rereadings: Seventeen writers revisit books ... ... books. Le Guin created a deep and fascinating world that I found to be engrossing and exciting. I didn't like Tehanu or The Other Wind because they just got way too out there, but A Wizard of Earthsea (stupid bad touchstones) is a must-read for any fantasy fan.
ETA: Also, the first ... ... it has been loaned out. I may mooch another copy.
In the meantime, i have pre-emptively extracted The Dream Room, The Other Wind, and Heart Of Darkness. I shall decide which to take with me tomorrow morning. Decisions, decisions. ... Earth
The Dying Earth
The Illearth War
The Urth of the New Sun
A Wizard of Earthsea
Children of the Wind
The Other Wind
A Wind in the Door
The Wind's Twelve Quarters
Gone with the Wind
Bears Discover Fire
The Wandering Fire
Fire on the Mountain
Fire Watch ... ... a suite of books consistency is somewhat important to me.
Sparrowhawk was believable in Tehanu, but not so much so in The other wind; why did he stay at 'home', in a place he really wasn't welcome, when he could have joined Tehanu and Tenar in their journey to Havnor? I can see there are ... ... in the original books. I suppose that someone reviewing them for Granta might say that Tehanu, and to a greater extent The Other Wind, "deconstruct" the original trilogy by calling its apparent values and assumptions about the world into question. Is that what you're referring to? ... help you there. I too sometimes find I have to read the whole series so far before I go on to the latest addition. With The other wind I very much felt the need to reread that one only, as the others are quite vivid in my memory, due to multiple rereads... ... i have only read once but in the last few years.
i't's not like i've forgotten the stories, so I could just read the other wind. I guess i just feel like i would be diminishing the experience. on the other hand, maybe i am overstating it, and i should just read the other wind and ... If you have read the other books enough times to remember them well you can read The other wind without rereading them all... That is what I just did, and for the same reasons as yours - too many books, not enough time. *sigh*
I've had the other wind in my tbr pile for a few weeks now. i've been putting it off because i feel i need to re-read the rest of the series first. But it's hard to commit to re-reading 4 books when i have so many books calling out tbr.
so, should i just read the other wind? or ... So... some 4 months later I actually got around to rereading The Other Wind!!!
*Spoiler warning*
I agree with you on the reading, Jim53, but I'm unsure of how we should interpret it. UKL is always radical, in a low key way. In this last (?) book she tries for closure, and possibly she ... ... - it's a slim volume but this far it's been more work than pleasure to try to read it. Therefore I decided to pick up The Other Wind for rereading. It was talked about a while ago in one of those drowed threads; about the books of Ursula K Le Guin (I've stopped trying to touchstone her - ... ... about Tales from Earthsea but am generally not a huge fan of the semi-connected short story-type of books, but I thought The Other Wind was more of the same. Thanks for the tip!
Edited to fix html ... of them.
Then I get to bring some (maybe) good news. There are two other Earthsea books - Tales from Earthsea and The Other Wind. Tales from Earthsea is a book of short stories that take place in the Earthsea world at various points in the timeline. The Other Wind is a novel and is the ... ... The Faded Sun, Making Money & Powers (bizarre touchstone, but it's an LeGuin book - her latest) plus a reread - The other wind.
What's YOUR definition of a TBR? I still haven't got around to reread The other wind - I'm entrenched in work and when I'm not working I'm reading those Foreigner-books, which by now functions as pure comfort/escape reads, for my mind to retreat to when it can't take any more... work.
But like Katylit I definitely haven't ... I was motivated by this thread to re-read The Other Wind. I had read it too quickly when it was new and didn't really appreciate it. I appreciated it much more on this re-read, and I've just posted a new review.
I didn't get into this in the review, because it would have involved SPOILERS ( ... All I'll say about Tehany is go on and read The Other Wind.
Yes there was several years gap between them being written but eventually Le Guin carries on the tale.
... it is all one story: A Wizard of Earthsea, The Tombs of Atuan, The Farthest Shore, Tehanu, Tales from Earthsea, The Other Wind. (My British publisher insisted on doing the two last in the wrong order, and I'm very sorry about that, since "Dragonfly" in the Tales makes the bridge ... ... be sure to put my two cents in on the conversation. I wonder if the SFBC will ever release an omnibus of Tehanu & the Other Wind? ... Cycle (5 books - Tales from Earthsea, A wizard from Earthsea, The Tombs of Atuan, The Farthest Shore, Tehanu & The Other Wind).
Personally I have always mentally organised The Left Hand of Darkness as fantasy as well, so I nominate that.
What about collections of short ... ... later, following up a few points from the end of the furthest shore, much different in style
and the most recent addition
The Other wind which closes the sequence, and clears up a lot of the ambiguity left from Tehanu.
Grrr. Someone give the touchstones some percussive maintenance with a ... This space used to contain the full category list, but there got to be too many touchstones, so I've broken them out into individual entries below and decided to delete this one. 1. Powers
2. The Other Wind (reread)
3. Looking for Alaska ... about the absence of women from her first Earthsea novel, and Tales from Earthsea offers a witty corrective, as does The Other Wind. Her current series, Voices and Gifts, also features astonishing young women.
I've always enjoyed Adele Geras's novels, and they continue to focus ... ... next one as well, but then we have to se...
Earthsea. LOVED the first three, struggled with the fourth Tehanu, read both The Other wind and Tales from Earthsea, both between good and so-and so.
17. *Tehanu by Ursula K. Le Guin (226)
18. *The Other Wind by Ursula K. Le Guin (246)
19. *Tales From Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin (296)
The rest (as far as I know) of the Earthsea books. This is a good series; I liked all of the books.
bluesalamanders in What Are You Reading Now? : What You're Reading the Week of 10 Feb 2007 (Feb 9, 2007, 5:04pm) I'm reading the Other Wind by Ursula K. Le Guin and Fifty Degrees Below by Kim Stanley Robinson. Fifty Degrees Below is longer and denser, so I've put it aside for a bit to read the shorter and slightly lighter Earthsea book. They're both very good, though - this is my first time ... ... Your Laptop to a Coffee Shop, all by John Scalzi.
I also stopped at the library the other day to pick up Tehanu, The Other Wind, and Tales from Earthsea by Ursula K. le Guin, since I just finished the first trilogy. I find it very confusing that the Earthsea books are scattered ... ...
It is not a light read, though, so it's taking some time. I stopped at the library the other day to pick up Tehanu, The Other Wind, and Tales from Earthsea by Ursula K. le Guin, since I just finished the first trilogy. I find it very confusing that the Earthsea books are scattered ... DOn't just read the trilogy - start with Tales from Earthsea then the trilogy then Tehanu and finish with the other wind (currently)
its a bit longer, but an impressive set of works.
Touchstones are very slow today.
Delivered to me this morning by the internet faeries: Luna by Julie Anne Peters, Tales from Earthsea and The other wind by Ursula K. Le Guin.
the first, because I took a shine to her YA books after reading Keeping you a secret, the latter pair because I was lent the first four ... ... it was so exciting to discover Le Guin had written more to the trilogy. I enjoyed it very much. I've listened to The Other Wind, but want to read it too. There's a fifth too - the other wind and a collection of short stories from before the founding of the university tales from earthsea. The fifth takes the story of Tehanu on which is good because without the other wind its a bit of an odd addition to the initial trilogy.
Quartet instead on ... Tehanu is only so odd because of the gap until the fifth work The other wind came out. This puts the flair back in, and tehanu gains depth, Teahnu works very well as bridge between the old Earthsea and the new strength of the dragons! I would put Earthsea as one of the very few series that does ...
