I thought I disliked Frost and also e.e. cummings. This outstanding selection showed me that I do not. The editors have done a great job of showcasing some of the finest poetry in the language. A wonderful book. ( )

In the last 75 years, many poets in the English-speaking world have written in an unprecedented range of styles and subjects. Beginning with Whitman, Dickinson, Hopkins and Hardy who anticipated and influenced the verse of their successors, they follow in order of generation, with no demarcation between England and America. This work is liberally annotated with footnotes which provide translations and explain allusions not in common knowledge. Finally, excellent Biographical material preceeds each poet's collection, with an emphasis on "what they wished their work to accomplish". (!) ( )
