Introduction, from an erudite Danish perspective (or indeed a continental European perspective, as the subject remains little appreciated outside Britain), to Dr. Samuel Johnson & his age, the English Enlightenment - certainly a more cautious era than its French counterpart, & perhaps more artistic than its pragmatic Scottish equivalent. The age of Garrick, Burke, & Sir Joshua Reynolds, all friends of Johnson, & the era of Sterne, Fielding, & Richardson. Also, Johnson may be as fundamental to English conservative ideology as Burke (if even less systematic). In any event, it's difficult to apprehend English Enlightenment without some understanding of Dr. Johnson, & this book does as fine a job as any other among the scant continental literature on the subject.
